2013 Toyota 86 gearbox concern
Hi guys. I'm about to purchase a 2013 high spec 86 with 68000kms on it. When shifting to 2nd gear at normal/low rpm, the gear seems to slightly grind, or not shift in smoothly as the other gears. Is this a normal thing with this year model? The owner did raise the issue to toyota at 40000kms but they said that its normal and not a fault.
Also the valve spring recall was done at 60000. After 8000kms is it safe to assume things are all okay? Appreciate your urgent advice. Thank you |
It’s normal especially when the car is cold but mostly any time it’s slower speeds and the car is coasting during the shift (like going downhill). This happened with my 2016 BRZ and is still happening on my 2020 BRZ. Like I said, it occurs almost all the time when I first start it up whether it’s morning or late in the day.

In my experience, my car never liked shifting into a higher gear at an already low RPM. I target my shifts at 2700RPM or above.
Change your transmission fluid and give it 500 miles to see if it helps |

The rough shifting into second is normal for most people. You car should be OK that many miles after the recall work. I suggest you just practice the timing on the 1-2 shift, when you are able to do it smoothly without using the clutch, you'll know you have the timing right - ;) |
Thanks for the info and reassurance guys. I'm going forward with the finance process. I would probably be asking a lot of questions as I'm learning about the 86 now lol.
Once I get the car I will have toyota change the gearbox and diff oil with the engine oil change. Super excited for my first rear wheel drive car. |

1st to 2nd shift issue is pretty much normal when the car is cold. once the gearbox is properly warm (after 15 minutes of driving) you shouldn't have a problem.

The twins are happiest when they are being driven quickly. I don’t mean driving like a maniac, but when your inputs are quick. I’ve experienced a notchy 1-2 shift many times while putting around, never when I’m driving faster.
So the faster you drive the twins the better they feel. It’s pretty cool when you think about it. The opposite of a relaxed cruiser type of car, or even muscle car. In regards to driver inputs, not all out speed. Tons of cars are faster than the twins. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Mine does the same thing. I remedied it a bit by using Motul 300 transmission oil. Getting a spare now, since I supercharged the car and anyday it can break.
Bottom line is that the manual transmissions on these cars are not stellar and the synchros are crap. Toyota/Aisin leaned on the weight and furl efficiency and they ended up with a weak transmission. The good thing is that they can be found pretty cheap in the used market. $600-800ish gets you a very low miles one with lots of life left. |
