Bent wheel

So my friends frs just got smacked, Right now we're in the process of doing body work ourselves but the rear wheel is bent inward. I was wondering if a simple alignment could fix this issue or is the Rear control arm bent and pretty much needs to be repaired? Is there any temporary fix for this? The wheel is bent inward at a decent angle :iono:

Take everything apart, inspect, and replace all parts that are not as they should be.

Decep 03-19-2020 08:19 PM

seriously? temporary fix for bent wheel and or suspension components?

FinallyGot 03-19-2020 08:19 PM

My bad I dont work on cars besides fixing body panels and paint, Chill out.

FinallyGot 03-19-2020 08:21 PM

As far as I can tell the LCA is bent, How much should I be paying for new ones?

soundman98 03-19-2020 08:24 PM

You may think me cold and unfeeling, but that's not good enough.

Know exactly what parts you need, measure parts from bolt-to-bolt on the good side, compare with bad side.

Sapphireho 03-19-2020 10:12 PM

Of better yet, you are a body guy. Take it to a suspension guy.

Well, that's a shame your friends car got smacked.

I would suggest it be taken in for an alignment. The alignment shop will be able to tell what is needed to be replaced to make the wheel straight.

Then you can worry about the wheel bearings and other wheel parts being whacked out.

Detailed pictures of the suspension damage would help here.

i've heard bungie cords and ratchet straps work great too!

in fact, i've read more than a few stories of 4x4's with busted front knuckles making it out of the forest with nothing more than a log and a ratchet strap holding the wheel to the truck.

Forsure, Trying to get this job done asap. With the coronavirus goin on he's having trouble getting around town etc. Took apart everything with the alignment shop and found out the tie rod and more were bent too.
Any other areas I should take apart and check?

Well, about a year ago, I whacked mrs humfrz's Saturn hard, broadside against a curb (NO, I don't wanna talk about how it happened - :(), and it needed a front strut, front spindle, front wheel bearing, front LCA, front wheel rim and a rear wheel bearing.

So, once the alignment is set so it will drive straight, a road test should show if anything is whacked out.

He shouldn't be trying to get around town anyway. That is the whole idea of the lockdowns.

Well, no. I drifted broadside on a snow covered street, into the curb. I was showing off to mrs humfrz how the nannies could pull a car out of sudden turn on slick roads. Well, she was NOT impressed - :paddle:

humfrz - :bonk:

If the guy is indeed a nurse and it isn't just a play for sympathy, he working so many hours he is so exhausted, he has obviously already substantially damaged his car at least once before, their combined mechanical skills can not figure out that a "bent" rear wheel means more than an alignment and there are no "tie rods" on the rear and they think they can bandage this all together then I think he should be looking for alternative transportation for the duration of this situation!

Ultramaroon 03-21-2020 04:03 AM

Well, I'll agree that the OP's buddy should take his car into a shop and rent a car until his is fixed.

I think his lack of mechanical knowledge is making him call the rear toe link a tie rod.

I'm a mechanic, my job is open, napa, carquest and best buy are still open (only open B2B on deliveries and drivers leave parts outside the door) and I just rebuilt the bearing plates for the alignment rack yesterday, were probably not the only shop in this situation, but bro wants to figure it out himself, which I think the current context makes harder.

If it needs fixing quick, bring it to a pro.

soundman98 03-21-2020 11:31 AM

as they say, "you can have it cheap, fast, or right. pick 1."

Here down under we use tree branches and duct tape , for the outback bush temporary repairs , until we limp it back into town.
