Quick Drain Plug

https://www.killerbmotorsport.net/fu...-1-5.html.html

I found this quick drain plug for the FA20 and at first though it would be a good idea. After realizing it has no magnet im not so sure anymore.

Do you think its a good idea or not?

azeo 11-13-2019 04:33 PM

I've had that exact same plug installed for about 40,000 miles now. Never had any issues with it and I drive it on track, in the winter, etc. I don't believe the stock plugs are magnetic so not sure what the benefits would be there?

While this is admittedly an extremely unlikely freak incident....

I once autocrossed a car with one of these. I hit a cone that remained wedged under the car. When I hit the brakes to stop the car, the cone opened up the fumoto valve, draining all the oil from a running car.

Joveen 11-13-2019 04:41 PM

It has a black thingy lol to keep it from opening.

That is a very funny but slightly depressing short story?

JD001 11-13-2019 04:46 PM

Well, they're called 'KillerBMotors" hopefully nothing to do with the quick oil plug thingy..

Ultramaroon 11-13-2019 05:47 PM

I think that the more important questions are:

1. Why consider a magnet?

2. Why consider a magnet on a valve?

I'm asking leading questions to gauge interest in the conversation.

I installed Fumotos on several cars in the last couple of yrs, love them.

That autocross thing got me worried but I have the black thingy.

I agree, why magnet? You do have an oil filter, right?

dholloway543 11-13-2019 06:03 PM

Magnet because the oil goes from the oil pan through the oil pump into the oil filter. Ie the pump see's all of the garbage.

I think im going to just mount an external magnet and run the quick drain plug.

bcj 11-13-2019 06:07 PM

The way forward. Makes oil changes simples.
Magnet valve? Yeah, no.

If you absolutely need magnets (for whatevers) put some on the outside of the filter after installation.
Braces and belt.

I use Fumoto valves on my vehicles, and have for years. Great product.

Well, now that you asked, magnets are very important to properly align the hydrocarbon chains in the oil, so they will become slipperier and be more effective in reducing friction.

It sorta works like this:

(dang, I can't remember if I took my meds this morning or not - :confused0068:)

The point of the magnet is to catch ferrous materials floating in the oil. -_-

be it, it is pretty funny how you guys describe it

DarkSunrise 11-13-2019 07:42 PM

I haven't had any problems with my Fumoto valves. I've got one on this car and one on my wife's GTI. Makes oil changes really simple and quick. Just be careful if you hit any debris or scrape your undercarriage.

If there is enough shaved steel in the oil to be noticed by the pump, the pump is the least of the worries. Don't take my word for it. Try a magnet plug for an oil cycle before you get the fumoto. You'll feel much better about it after that.

The fumoto makes me smile whenever I use it. Money very well spent.

86MLR 11-13-2019 09:17 PM

I use and recommend

Never had an issue.

I put one in my Lotus, but the plug is not exposed to the road, and protected by under body panels. I don't feel comfortable running a valve that sticks out from the skid plate on a lowered car, so I run an aftermarket magnetized plug in the twin.

BirdTRD 11-14-2019 06:49 AM

Installed mine 6 years ago...0 issues. My son has one on his Veloster...0 issues and if it wasn't for the free dealership oil changes on my wife's Forester, she'd have one too.

RidSons86 11-14-2019 10:54 AM

I have one of these and it is awesome, makes oil changes extremely easy. It comes with a clip that blocks the valve from being opened, keep that on and it won’t be a problem.

wolffbite 11-14-2019 12:08 PM

+1 for a fumoto valve! 2 years installed and no issues.

Wow. They didn't have these safety clips when I bought my valves! Ordering a couple now.....

you do have a good point. TBH i have never seen any shavings on any magnet I have used in the past. I think im going to get one

czechm8 11-14-2019 12:34 PM

I use FilterMAG's in combination with the Fumoto valves on my vehicles as an added measure.

It used to be more of a thing back in the day when engines were manufactured with less precision, cast iron blocks, blah blah...

I get it. My dad used them so I used them. You'll love the fumoto.

8RZ 11-14-2019 01:57 PM

I had Fumoto valves on the past 3 cars I've owned and love them.

weederr33 11-14-2019 02:08 PM

I need to pick one of these things up. I just have an irrational fear it's going to get flicked off by some random debris.
