What changes thru the years

I just bought a 2020 BRZ. After researching aftermarket parts i see a difference in some parts starting with 2017. Can someone direct me to a thread explaining the changes.

Yes I know, I did search. Thanks

DarkPira7e 10-07-2019 09:52 PM

Different intake manifold, 4.3 final drive vs 4.1. Several exterior changes, performance pack became an option with Brembos. More bad headunits, steering wheel audio controls...I'm sure there's a lot more little things but that's most of the big changes.

I'm assuming you mean "what changed starting with 2017 compared to 2013 through 2016"

Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy it in good health!

Thanks for the input. Interesting read. The "marketing info" makes it sound like the car has great linear power. NOT. I cant imagine how bad tbe torque dip is on the earlier models, based on this marketing hype.
That said, i do enjoy the car. The balance is great. the "turn in" and "set" is about as good as any car I've ever driven. The rear rotation at turn in is just right. I look forward to my next track day. This willbe my first track experience with a low hp car. Should be fun in the corners
Cheers

Don't let the torque dip talk worry you.

If your plodding around on the street you never notice it, and if your leaning on the car it's never in that rev range anyway.

The torque dip has been marketed well by aftermarket parts manufactures and suppliers though.

This deserves a million thanks. Even when I choose to floor it in first or second I don't notice it. And you can't floor it in any higher gear without ending up in prison or at least an absurd ticket.

If you did the research you wouldnt need to make this thread...

OP opens a thread for well documented changes posted all over the interwebz just to give us a low blow about the "torque dip" and how "bad" it must be for the pre-refreshed models....don't think he'll last long here..

I learned to downshift and upshift at the redline, still haven't been stuck in torque dip land..

Respectfully, I don't agree with your assessment. The first time I drove the car, I put my foot in it as I do regularly with all my cars. And the dead spot slapped me in the face. And you can feel the car come back alive at 4500 on my car.

I was searching for a car for my wife. I had been looking at used M3's. Just left a 2011 test drive and was very disappointed. The only thing that car had going for it was the DCT trans and the awesome sound.
I gave up on the search, stopped at the Subaru dealer and bought the car. They didn't even have the car yet. As I knew it would be my wife's car, I wasn't too concerned about what the car would turn out to be. A bit of an impulse buy I suppose. I'm not having buyers remorse. I'm just stating my findings and trying to learn what I can about the car.

So as you can see, I didn't know what a BRZ was until I bought one. It appears any negativity about this thread seems to be that no onw has noticed the good things I said about the car.

Come on team, I'm not here to make enemies. I'm just stating what I feel in the car. So in case you were put off and moved on before you finished reading my post, below is a snippet of what you must have missed.

You know full well you don’t get “stuck” in torque dip land. You come out on the other side eventually...:D

It’s not a “major” problem but I’d still prefer that it wasn’t there.

ya could have left it at that, great handling....the torque dip crap is so old and boring to read...it is triggering because first off ya bought a car with a small NA engine....and in practice it is a load of crap! If you can "feel" the torque dip, then ya need to downshift :iono: the way I typically drive, once my car is warmed up I take first all the way to redline and when I shift into 2nd it is at around 5K RPM, above the "torque dip"....and remember I got the engine with the "major dip"!

eh well the way most people describe it, to me it sounds like they are eternally stuck in torque dip land so much so that apparently keeping the revs between 5 to 7 K is no longer viable. maybe some folks here are truly stuck in torque dip limbo??

Meh, it's a cheap sports coupe with a flat 4 in a niche market that makes more NA power stock than most/all other new cars in its price point.

exactly...what engines are people comparing the FA20 to? To me the most comparable engine is the F20C...but the S2000 was a 30K+ car almost 2 decades ago and it isn't dramatically any faster than a twin...they virtually have the same amount of wheel torque. And in order to fit that engine and have a great balance, the hood had to be long AF, only got 2 seats and a small trunk..the twin's packaging has to be respected..

soundman98 10-08-2019 09:45 PM

i've always enjoyed the torque dip, because it provides a very clear difference between 'cruising' and 'gimme dat on-ramp'

It is a 10% drop for a 10th of a second at high acceleration. If that slaps you in the face then you must be very sensitive.

Lantanafrs2 10-08-2019 11:10 PM

You did buy a manual transmission?

Then I must be very sensitive and/or the torque dip gets worse with age. When I'm just giv'n 'er a bit more on the street I don't plan on keeping it around redline the whole time; I like to use the mid-range RPM, right where the dip is. That and some of the creature comforts are what make me miss my E46 zhp.

I do need to get more track time with this thing to hopefully make me fall in love (should be able to keep out of the dip there, unless the gearing is really unsuited to the track). The first (and only so far) was a 3 lap start that ended without an engine. :bonk:

It's a 2 liter motor. Even without the dip, it is not like it would have much torque there that you would want to drive it in the mid-range.

Gearing is going to be track dependent. Pre-17' gearing is not bad, a bit tall. I find the post-17' and up a bit better over a wider variety of tracks.

I don't think it was the intention, but an original AE86 dips in the same spot, right before TVIS activates on the 4AGE. So it really is a modern hachiroku. haha.

So we need Marty Mcfly to go back in time and convince Toyota to remove the torque dip on the 4AGE and by legacy our cars won't have it either :iono:

Leonardo 10-09-2019 03:16 PM

Thoughts on changes...

I bought mine in 2012. Later they built a series blue with blue interior. IDK who's favorite color is red, but it is not me. BLUE all the way. Anyway, this change was significant to me. (I also want dual climate, but not enough to attempt the climate control swap or to sell my car)

I think the power is pretty damn good for an NA motor. A Golf GTI has 169kw vs the twins 152kw. Granted there's a massive torque difference, but still, I'm impressed at the hp/kw per litre at this price point. There's definitely enough power for amateur drivers to get themselves into trouble.

As for the torque dip. I came from a very low kw hatchback, 55kw, so I'm used to downshifting to pass cars. There's no lazy power or fat torque here. You have to "earn" the power and I prefer that. I think a lot of people who complain about it come from higher hp muscle cars or turbo hot hatches.

You are being nice. I'd just call them clueless whiners. My last car was a Yaris. 105 hp for only 2200 pounds was rather entertaining. Of course before that was a Saab Viggen. 245 pound feet of torque all driven through the front wheels was highly entertaining.

If this was the 86 people would complain about the torque dropping away from 5k rpm.

You can only keep some of the people happy some of the time.

Lol, maybe. Yeah mine was a '95 Nissan Micra. Very light, 810kg tare weight I think. But low horsepower.

Lantanafrs2 10-10-2019 11:21 PM

The "torque dip" is easy to get rid of. Patient shopping on classifieds did it for me. Otherwise just drive around it. If you put 600lbs of meathead in the car like one of the YouTube videos the dip will be an issue lol
