OFT stage 1 worth it on 2017+
 

I’ve searched and read through a lot of posts, but have yet to find a thread like this. I recently purchased a 2019 GT86 and am wondering if anyone can chime in on how the OFT stage 1 performs vs the factory tune on MY 17+ cars.

Somebody could come in her and be veeeery snarky with what you are asking for.
The thing is if you have OFT tablet, the results are going to be very similar no matter what year you have.

You can be there for days looking at results people are getting with OFT.

I have a 2013 and the stage 1 tune helps get rid of the sluggish acceleration at low rpms. Though the best thing about the OFT is that you can tune the car for E85, which makes a pretty big difference overall.

Since the 2017+ engines have revised tuning, a slightly better intake design, a somewhat reduced torque dip and develop a little more horsepower I would assume that the OFT doesn't make as noticeable an improvement by itself (everything else being stock) as it does on the earlier models. BUT, I also would like to hear from those who have actual experience with an OFT on a 2017+ model. Thanks!

As long as you are fine with throwing your power-train warranty in the trash, it will pick up a few ponies.

I didn't think it was worth it on my 2013 but I picked up an oft and header for under 800 and at that point I figured I could gamble on it.

What? My dealer did an engine out warranty repair with an aftermarket header, intake, and an E85 tune.

There are other dealers that have refused engine warranty work due to an axle back exhaust. Dealers are not all created equal.

E85 is the answer you seek. There is no reason to not buy an OFT. There is not a whole lot of improvement to be had over stock on the gasoline tunes, but the difference on E85 is huge.

Not sure if $400 (used) - $500 (new) is worth 4HP to you?

But if you're going to do more basic N/A engine mods down the road, then I'd say it is more than worth it.

If you're not looking to mod your engine any, then save your $$ for wheels/tires, suspension kit, aesthetics, or something else.

Depends on what Subaru wants to make a warranty claim, if they ask for a copy of the ECU files which is pretty common when doing a warranty claim, then its a clear cut no unless there is an obvious mechanical failure that happened.

Well isnt that the beauty of the OFT that you can just flash it back to stock?

My '17 BRZ stock feels faster than my '13 FR-S OFT Stage 2 UEL 93 map, probably all due to the revised final drive.

They did a really good job with the Kouki addressing majority of the Zenki complaints.

But personally I don't think an OFT Stage 1 tune is going make a noticeable difference over stock, a well done handcrafted tune will though. :)

A few weeks ago I flashed my 2017 BRZ w/ the OFT Stage 1 v.4 tune, there is a bit of reduction in the torque dip and more aggressive timing above 3-3.5k rpm iirc. Throttle response is a little better and the car is a little easier to drive smoothly for daily use. If you don't plan on getting catted/uncatted headers in the future (or E85) I'm not sure if its worth it, unless you want the additional features like the quiet start feature (nice if you have a louder exhaust and live in residential area), launch control & flat foot shifting which could be nice if that's useful to you.

Sure, but they have areas in the ECU or BCM that record the amount of times the ECU was flashed, etc. If those don't match what the system shows its obvious the car has been messed with. Maybe they don't look at it as closely on the 86, but the wrx/sti world is very common. Same thing with GM/Ford(especially diesels)

Buy the OFT, OP.

I liked mine until the newer tunes came out. 2013 every once in a while would idle terribly on cold starts on the 3.0 and newer tunes.

Meh, sold it. Fun tinkertoy imo. You're probably better off getting a custom tune.
