Nail but no leak. Anything to worry about?

1 Attachment(s)
So I was rotating my tires and found a nail on one of the front tires (stock primacys) in between the treads. The nail seemed pretty small so I pulled it out and it turned out to be about a 1/3 inch deep. It still isn't leaking air.

Should I leave it and check for leaking periodically? Should I go ahead with the rotation and put it in the rear? I don't track it, but do like to take it up in the mountains.

Maybe there's an obvious answer, but I'd like to hear your opinions/wisdom :)

Car is totalled. Part it out.

Don't worry about it. No leaking, you are fine.

Put a little soapy water on it and see if it bubbles.

I drove the last 15000 miles of a set of tires with a nail in one. It would leak down and trigger a warning light every week or so. Sometimes it would seat nicely and go for a few weeks.

No bubbles coming out.

I guess I won't worry about it then. Doubt there will be a catastrophic failure driving on the street.

Put some rubber vulcanizing liquid in the hole if not bubbling. That'll seal the deal.

If it was my tire I would carefully pull it out and see how long it is. If it was really long or has a leak, it is an easy repair at a tire shop

Apparently so would they since that is what they said in the very first post!

Why is there a circular scuff pattern on the tread?

I also have one with no leak. Looks dangerous but im still pushing it hard lol.

Guessing but front tires, scuffed when turned either standing still or moving very slowly.

Oh, I believe I would replace that tire.

A person could get tetanus from that - :eyebulge:

yep I was maneuvering into a good position on some rough concrete :)

Enkrow 09-21-2018 04:28 AM

I had a similar nail situation at the beginning of the year. You're fine.

Hopefully this one sets the bar for my dumbest post ever.

I realized after reading this article, just how stupid I was for slacking. Mine DID leak. Were it not for functional and sensitive tpms, I may very well have caused a serious mishap.

Never ever knowingly operate a vehicle with compromised tires.

At least it looks like you got some miles on the tires first.
I bought a new set of Advan A048's and picked up an un-patchable nail in the two blocks from the tire shop to my apartment.

That is a really long-winded, over the top, had-to-call-911-twice-because-i-was-so-scared article for something that should of said "I didn't know my tire was flat and the rim chewed it enough till it ripped off"

Don't feel bad for slacking, you kept it in check and didn't get to the point of damage to your tire. Worst case scenario? The nail maybe falls out..

225/40-18. I was able to rush a replacement in time for the track day I had.

I realized I had low pressure due to a nail recently. Hopefully the time was short enough for the leak and low pressure to not do too much damage.

Ok, yeah.

I did have a free air chuck right around the corner from work.

I'm just trying to justify not getting my nail in the tire fixed :\

Takes about 2 weeks to drop 3-5 psi.

I do keep a small air compressor in glove box at all times, and air it up to 32 psi once it drops to around 28-29 psi. Or if the car sits longer than a few days and the light is on. But usually the former.

Yeah, I'd be a little more cautious with a compromised sidewall...

Right? As long as you don't get it more than a few psi low...

Once, after getting most of the way home to Albuquerque from Santa Fe, while I was going downhill about 80 in my 240Z, the driver's side rear tire failed catastrophically. Always wondered why it happened. Now I can see how a slow leak over all those hot miles would weaken the sidewall. Straight highway lowered on Bilsteins and I never felt it get soft.

Just now put that together for the first time. :bonk:

guybo 09-29-2018 08:53 AM

At a gas station, next to the air pump, pull the nail out and see if it leaks air (spit on it). If not, it didn't penetrate you're good to go. If it does leak air, use the tire plug kit you have on hand (they are like $5, so you should have one in your glovebox anyway) and plug it.

Don't let a nail sit in your tire. I have changed 10's of thousands of tires (AAA guy) and what happens is that the nail sits in there sometimes for days, sometimes for months- but at some point the tire will heat up and spit the nail out, then you will have a flat in a matter of minutes, maybe hours if the hole is in a good spot and the nail is small.

Just take care of it today

chaoskaze 09-29-2018 07:54 PM

seriously guys... go to discount tires & have it patch up for free. :slap: All you need to do is drive there.
