2018 tS steering clunk

So I just got a 2018 tS and it has 1100 miles on it and the steering wheel is making a "clunk" when I turn the wheel at slow speeds. I can also recreate the issue sitting still and turning the wheel. If i turn the wheel to the right all the way to the stop, as soon as I turn it back to the left it makes the noise. When I'm pulling out of a driveway making a right turn it also makes the noise. I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel as well when it happens. Anyone else experienced this issue? And if so what was the fix?

No, but, if my car were new, I'd take it back to the dealer and ask them to sort it out and fix it.

Take it to the dealer and have them double-check that everything is torqued to spec, not loose, etc. Including wheels.

Had this exact same issue just last week and it's quite possible a wheel had a loose lug or two. Once everything was removed and re-torqued the issue disappeared.

Why would anyone with a new car under warranty bother posting here in an attempt to find what was wrong with their virtually new car? Toyota/Subaru don’t give you a warranty for free or because they think you’re a great guy. It’s factored in to the price you paid for your car so use it at every op you get so you get the value out of it Anything to do with steering is a MUST return to dealer ASAP situation.

DANG, Bodalenko, why are you slapping around on @Brz_racer …….??

I reckon he just wants some input from the forum to possibly gain some background information before taking his car into the dealer ……. :iono:

Ya if you go to the dealer without a clue as to what it could be, they will F up your car. Just my opinion.

Well I'm taking it in Wednesday, when I go in I'll ask them that even if they are unable to find anything obvious, just check all the bolts and nuts and any other fastener that has to do with the steering or suspension. Almost guaranteed they will find something loose and not properly torqued. Was just looking for some input as I didn't want to walk in there cross-eyed with my **** in my hand.

Who here would really have a clue about a mysterious noise in the steering? Could be one of a hundred things. You just take the car straight back and say “Fix it!” You don’t need to know what’s wrong with it before you get it there. Not your responsibility. You only want to know what the did to fix it, why it needed fixing, and the likelihood of it happening again. So long as you get a copy of the service report to keep in your service book who cares. You worry about things tha go bang or squeal once you mod it or it’s out of warranty.

Not if it's under warranty

I worked at Toyota and we were never be able to find the cause of the clunk. 5 years down the road and the car is still fine. It just clunk from time to time.

Decep 05-28-2018 01:15 PM

I'm betting it disappears by the time you get to the dealer, as things like this usually do. I had a nice creak in my steering when parking for 2 weeks. Took it to a Subaru shop around here and it disappeared and never returned. Maybe just getting it on the lift fixed it.

Grab a soft rubber mallet and jack the car up & start banging.

take it to dealer thou

Reminds me of the time I bought this old GMC pickup truck from my son-in-law ……. just to have a pickup truck.

It had a heavy metal clunk/creak somewhere in the suspension. I asked Bubba how to fix it and he told me to spray the undercarriage and suspension with kerosene. I soaked (sprayed) about 2 gallons of kerosene all under that truck …… Bubba was wrong …… it still creaked loudly ….. :bonk:

I bet it disappears too. while my '13 never exhibited such a sound within 60 k miles, the steering clunk sound i started noticing in my '16 a few weeks ago has now disappeared.. :iono: though now that i think about it, i do have lowering springs whereas i kept the stock ride height on the first frs..not sure if it could be related to that

"It disappeared and never returned."

Assuming it's similar to the issue I had, I'm sure they checked things for looseness and re-tightened them to spec.

So sure it disappeared but maybe bringing to the shop fixed it because they checked everything with normal procedure? Rather than bringing it to the shop and leaving and suddenly it's gone?

Yeah but most shops with tell you they find something wrong, rather than shrug and say "EH, everything's fine, ma crazy dude"

This car is completely stock right now, this isn't a normal sound. I had a 2014 for 4 years and it was silent the whole time ..something is jiggling that isn't supposed to be jiggling.

perhaps, but hey my '16 exhibited the sound after 2.5 years and it went away. i just store it under the many noises this car makes that doesn't have any effect on performance. i figure if something is actually loose or mechanically wrong then steering would feel off but this was never the case with my noise and it doesn't sound like you're having any performance issues either.

Imprezzave 12-10-2018 02:05 PM

I think I have this sound too, happens when I'm coming out of a drive way at a downward angle and my wheels are turned to the right. As soon as I get onto the street and my wheels straighten out, I hear a pop or a clunk.
