Subaru BRZ starting problem. Key? Immobilizer?
Hello guys. Got some serious problem here. 6 months ago I bought Subaru BRZ Limited with keyless starting feature etc. Everything was ok for 6 months untill now. 3 weeks ago It started to happen randomly. When im pressing the clutch then pushing the START button the car is starting up normally but second after it stalls. Sometimes it's starting like there is no problem at all. But for example day after it's happening again. I changed clutch safety switch for brand new one but it didn't help. Changed key battery too, nothing. I tried to change car battery, bought a new one, stronger, connected to the car and key won't even open the door when im pressing the buttons. It just doesnt even respond with new battery so switched back to my OEM old one.
Is it immobilizer related? Or maybe a key? I don't have a spare key to try tho. Do I need a new key programming maybe? Fighting with this problem for 3 weeks now. Im driving the car afraid it can happen and I will be stuck somewhere... Video of the problem: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtgW8D4d0G4[/ame] Thanks in advance. |
in for solution, but seems you can rule out imobilizer since the car fires up. if key wasnt in sync it wouldnt start.
i suspect someone more familiar may mention a maf or intake issue? |
Is the car stock? Did you change anything before the problem started?
|
It's pretty much stock. Valenti tail lights and Invidia N1 catback both parts right after I bought it.. No other electric mods.

Does push start work?
|
Yes, push start works fine, clutch safety switch works fine. Sometimes I have no problems with starting. It's kinda random...

Any codes showing up .. ??
Does your gas have ethanol in it .... ?? If not, you may consider adding a can of isopropyl alcohol to your gas tank, to absorb any water. humfrz |
No codes at all, fuel is fine. Today I tried to start it up and it didnt even fire up. Just lights came up like normall but no crank. My steering wheel is not locked tho. Maybe its the battery? Yesterday had it cranked and stalled but today not even a crank. Im fully recharging battery right now to check it.

You may wish to check the battery with a "load test". It wouldn't hurt to clean your battery terminals and check the fluid in the battery. humfrz |
Battery is always a good starting point. Surprised a code hasn't been thrown though, so it can't be that bad?

I would go and get a spare key, try locksmith first. (yes I know they are expensive). but if this key dies completely you going to be in for more cost and towing to dealer. If you loose of beak all keys its more expensive then just replacing keys. Then tackle to intermittent car stalling, it might not be related to key |
Ok, a little update here guys. First of all thanks for trying to help me out with this sh*t. Today It doesn't even crank...
Yesterday I fully recharged battery and checked most of the fuses for ignition, starting system or power steering - all seem to be fine, power steering is ok, clutch safety switch seems to be fine aswell as it finds the key when I push the clutch. I'm about to check the starter or connections to the starter. I hear the 'click' but no crank. I'm guessing have to look under the car to get the starter out? Here's the vid from today: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rCCv1U0TqA[/ame] |
OK, got some code's showing up:
B27A2 : [Passenger side external antenna output stage open] B2786 : No response from steering lock ECM I managed to delete these codes but those 2 codes above are showing up even after I delete them: B1011 : BATT power supply (control) malfunction B1012 : BATT power supply (backup) malfunction B1013 : IGN power supply failure B1014 : ACC power failure I checked fuse's but all are fine... |
hmmm...……. when you turn on the headlights on, are they bright?
What voltage does your battery read? Come back. humfrz |

I know you charged the battery but check it again. Either it is toast or you have a really bad cable connection at the posts. |
This could possibly be an ECU problem as well, maybe try and get the ECU flashed and see what happens
|
Yes, lights come up normally with bo issues, battery voltage is good too.
Im happy to say that I solved the problem. Was that simple I cant belive it caused so many problems. So few monts ago I had my passenger window changed. Since then I couldnt open the passengers door with key in my pocket. I mean I could open it clicking Unlock button twice on my key fob but not by grabing the handle with key in my pocket. Someone didnt plug the switch when I had my window changed and thats why it was causing immobilizer and start up problems... I pluged it in, deleted all codes and car runs without issues now... thanks for trying to help me. Im happy to drive it again. |

I was going to comment on this saying that "Passenger side external antenna output stage open" means something is wrong inside the passenger side door sensor, but looks like you figured it out! |
Yeah :D but its kinda crazy that after months it started to be an issue tho
