Beyond Bluetooth for a phone this would be new territory for me. So school my newbie butt on what’s out there and why and how you use it.

Oh I also have a Samsung notebook thingy and I have no problems paying for a decent app if it’s worth it.

Cheers

Bluetooth OBD reader and app. "Torque" is popular. I had OBDlink before I got my OFT.

What does this little beast do for you?

It's a gauge pod on your phone or tablet screen.

You can plug in the obd reader to your car's obd port, pair it with your phone, and read things that aren't displayed on your dash using the app. You can use it with pretty much any vehicle too.

Ah, fault codes etc. Thanks.

Not just fault codes. Things like oil temperature, bus voltage, or manifold pressure can be displayed.

Oh I like that.
Any brands or unit recommendations?

The most popular is the Torque app that works with pretty much any reader, but some of the cheap ones have poor performance/reliability/support from what I heard. I had a OBDLink reader that worked great, but it's one of the more expensive ones. The OBDLink app only works with their readers of course, but I think you can use Torque too.

I much prefer the OBDlink app personally. Yes the reader is more expensive, but the refresh rate on the data channels is much faster too. You can use it for gauges and they sweep smoothly.

I always used OBDlink as well. Didn't bother with Torque so good to know I wasn't missing anything.

No, but I'll add one to my build thread (haven't updated that in way too long) and link it here.

Read carefully when buying a BT dongle for an iPhone, as Crapple uses a non-standard standard, or did a year or two ago.

Does many things, including turning off stupid LED running lights.

I like Waze, it's one of the best navigating apps ever. Here is the review if you are interested. It shows all the traffic jams, crashes and other stuff on the rod so the root is always optimal. Very convenient.

I must be the only person that doesn't like Waze.

I've attempted to use it on multiple roadtrips and just found it annoying. It also twice lead me into traffic instead of away from it. Once it tried to take me down what could best be qualified as a cart path (literally two wheel tracks through the middle of a field) to get around something.

Every time I was better off using common sense and the GPS in my car.
