Tire Recommendation
 

Hi,

I am looking for a tire recommendation for stock BRZ size.

I prioritize the following 3 characteristics: Fuel Economy, Cheap, Hydroplane resistance.

I don't care about dry grip and performance.

I know the highly rated ones are MPSS or other "good tires" but they do not fit the first 2 characteristics I am looking for.

Does any one ahve any recommendations?

I assume your stock tires are done.



These are a good tire, are insanely cheap after the rebate, and the shipping is free! They are a summer tire with 300 treadwear.

Based on your criteria a good All-Season tire will be best for you. Check out the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s or the BFGoodrich G-Force Comp 2 A/S.

Those are great tires! But, AS3's are only $10 cheaper for a set than the MPSS, So I don't think that fits OP's criteria.


The BFG is $500 for a set.








I made my suggestion, because they are $283 for a set, OP didn't mention cold just wet conditions, and because a good summer also works in rain. And because the A/S Sumitomo is only $10 less per set.

Both good choices. Not sure if they meet the "cheap" criteria though. Michelin does usually have rebates that can reduce the price from "You want how much?" to "OK I can live with that". I think I got an $80 a set rebate when got mine.

Unless he is only driving the car between late May and Early September then cold will be a consideration due to his location.

True. I didn't look at his location. Just his search criteria (budget)


I have experience with the A/S Michelin, MPSS, BFG Sport Comp 2 A/S, and Sumitomo HTRZ III. The Sumitomo HTRZ III, is a great tire for the money paid.


I do not have experience with cheap A/S tires. I didn't want to suggest a tire that I do not have first hand experience with.


It sounds like OP wants LRR tires, except that they are expensive...

True, you guys are right i guess everyone has a different meaning of cheap lol. I think the G-Force Comp are definitely priced well its a good proven tire. OP dont cheap out on tires its worth the cost to get a good tire

His criteria sounds more like a touring tire than a performance tire. I have run all those except the Sumitomo ones (which I have never even heard of before) with relatively good success with each. Never tried them all on the this car though am sort of restricted in what I know. I love my AS3+ tires but a few people here didn't like them at all so like so many things it depends on what his driving plans are.

+1 for the HTR Z IIIs. Very good dry and wet performance at an amazing price point.

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/3+. Pretty pricey but it’s a performance tire. MPG dropped around 2 MPG when I switched from stock. Treadlife isn’t as great as stock. 23,000 miles out of 45,000 and they are done. I would get the Michelin Premiere AS since you want a good tire but not focused base. The premier AS has this technology as when it gets worn, it still safe for wet because new grooves appear.

I have 4 Michelin Primacy HP's pulled from my new BRZ with zero miles on them. If you were in Vegas, you could have all four of them for $250 total. Yeah, I know everyone calls them Prius tires, but if you have a daily driver, they are really quite good....

With your requested criteria, Buy stock tires that others have removed!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, yes I am looking for something like these. Need to find a place that sells them in Canada though. I do have a set of blizzaks for the winter. I drive ~20-25k miles a year so that's why I wanted LRR. I also enjoy hanging the tail out occasionally.

Having trouble locating a set in my area for cheap. Going by the classifieds section on this forum, there's like 3-4 WTB Stock tire threads.

Do you need a tire that is capable of functioning safely in winter precipitation and/or dry, colder weather? (asking cuz of your location - and how this may or may not be your 'summer car')

Rain and hydro planning is my only concern in terms of safety. I rate that highly. When it gets cold I swap on a set of winters.

I agree with Leonardo that if you are looking for value, the HTR Z3 is worth consideration. I've not driven it in wet and I've only driven it on a front wheel drive car, but it does have a solid reputation for all-around performance including wet traction. Most ratings suggest it should provide reasonable fuel economy for a tire in its class.

In that same price range, there is also the FireHawk Indy 500, which people on this forum (and others) absolutely love. Most owners of this tire seem to feel that hydroplaning resistance is simply exceptional. However, I doubt fuel economy was given much consideration compared to other markers of performance.

(Both of these two tires should be under $100 USD a pop.)
(It's worth noting that I replaced the OEM Primacy tires with the A/S 3+ - I expected to see a decrease in fuel economy from what I have read, plus given the A/S 3+ is like 2 pounds heavier a tire, but since doing this I observed the opposite - I have no explanations other than either I've gotten better at driving efficiently or the car's alignment was so far off when brand new that this was affecting mileage negatively.)
