Sorry But - Updated OFT Vs Ecutek?
Sorry to post something that has been done multiple times. The most I can find are years old, though.
I have the OFT, and was considering moving over to ECUtek due to the tuner availability. I like the OFT a lot, but the ECUtek phone app and other items do look a bit easier and quite useful (launch control via phone in real time?!). My question is: How much of a difference is there as far as ability goes between the two? I have seen so many posts or comments about OFT can't do this or that only to have Shiv come in and correct them. Are there things that Ecutek can do that OFT cannot? If I am boosting does it really matter which? Some say ECUtek if boosted, but I know OFT can handle boosted applications too. Is this preference and options only, or is there a reason to go ECUtek over OFT other than the sweet phone app and triple maps? Again, sorry to ask the question I am sure has been asked a million times, but I don't see any newer posts with updated info, and I assume things have been added/changed for both platforms. |
Start with link below
http://http://www.ft86club.com/forum...d.php?t=106068 NA car only go ecutek if you want the festures. You can get same results with oft or tactrix. OFT has flex tunes for 2012-2016 No flex fuel for 2017 yet You dont need ecutek phone app to switch maps or adjust launch control you can alresdy do it via cruise stalk. You will get nore tuners options with ecutek Hence you will get more fi kits supported than with oft For higher boost appications and electronic boost control and multiple failsafes it starts to swing toward Ecutek If you were just going for say basic SBD kit at 10psi then oft will be fine. If you wanted to run higher boost with electronic boost control and switchable boost maps then you would need ecutek. If you want to look at the tunes and see changes as you get custom tune and maybe tweak the odd thing yourself then mabe oft. Although james as HRI tuning doesnt lock his ecutek tunes, but you would need racerom extension ro resrly see what going on as standard ecutek softwsre you cannot see or edit custom maps even in unlocked tunes Jist depends what you want |

3 questions: - What hardware changes do you have? - Which tune are you running now? - What is your goal? Yes, there is a lack of tunes who publicly offer to tune remotely using OFT. In fact, I can only think of Shiv. I posted this... http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=477 ...in the Gruppe-S header thread. If you are interested I would offer this even if your car doesn't have a Gruppe-S header. |
It's nearly 3x the cost to get the Bluetooth and everything else from Ecutek (unless I was misinformed about needing the standard cable still).
That said, I think it comes down to whether you're after a setup supported by OFT already or not (that could include any of the many shared maps, etc.) |
@Tor I am mid turbo install (ups managed to steal or lose the turbo from the kit so I'm going on 2 months since I ordered).
I have a bunch of stuff done. Gruppe-s uel headers (had em a while, love em) Full exhaust (single exit) Pulley kit I did get an electronic boost controller (sitting in the pod waiting for the turbo) 18x9.5 wheels Oil catch can (mishimoto) Other stuff that doesn't matter for turbo. Had to remove my intake and dp for the turbo kit. I've had oft for years, but I think it's time for the switch. I'll be doing remote first and later in the year, dyno (none close that I know of is why). I'd like to tune or tinker myself but not just yet so that portion of ecutec can wait. Also thank you everyone for the replies to the worn out question.
I'll go over/through the suggested threads. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |

It sounds like you can do some tuning with the dongle, just not full fledged tuning. I think it requires an upgraded RaceRom before you can full on tinker, but it sounds like you can upgrade to this any time. Not gonna lie, their product page and videos are confusing together (For me). Not sure what I get with what products, or how many products there are. Time to read some more! |
Tuning forced induction is more critical, so not the best to start tinkering with yourself. Like you said, it limits the available tuners if you are not going Ecutek. Combined with the advantages Steve mentioned above with Ecutek and forced induction and there is your answer?

you couuld use an external electronic boost controller like plex https://www.plex-tuning.com/product/...troller-basic/ but they cost heaps as above and its actually cheaper and simper to get ecutek tuneing system which can use standard ecu to control a cheap 3 port boost solenoid directly. If you want an open ecutek tune you can look at ie not locked use James Martin at HRI tuning. https://www.hrituning.com/ hes one of the few ecutek tuner that does not lock tunes |

It's too bad, because it would make logging for tune tweaks (which is common when you get an off-the-shelf tune from the good vendors) rather simpler. I don't look forward to the hour+ drive so I can do a few good pulls... |
Steve99 correct me if im wrong but those ecutek features dont exist for the 2017 models yet.

I'm leaning towards Ecutek with remote tune. Nameless suggested I contact Delicious. My fear is driving 2 hours to a tuner in your area; and just having that one tune with no ability to change things myself. It would be best with a definitive answer here; but it seems there are problems and nobody wants to be the one to say 'if you bought a 17 you better have them ducketts $$$$. The 2016 I was looking at, the guy wanted more than the great deal I got on the 17'; but if I had considered these difficulties; I'd be in that 16' I can't support OFT - if Shiv can't do basic website updates; there is no way I can send him more money for a second OFT. (Sold the first with the 13'). Ecutek seems to be the solution; but even then they start stacking choices and confusion; without clarity on a 17' solution! (do the features work or not?!?!). |
I went with EcuTek. I am trying to decide who to get a tune from now. Delicious tuning or HRI tuning.
HRI leaves tunes unlocked so you can at least see them and learn something, or even tweak it if you have the right EcuTek (I don't yet). And for about the same price Delicious offers a canned tune for specific kits, while HRI offers a custom for that price. Both are great from what I hear, but I like open tunes and custom vs canned. I figured with an electronic boost controller a custom would be better. |

The only ecutek tuners I know of that leave tunes unlocked are James at HRI and I believe VitViper tuning but check with them |

correct, currenty opensource has no patches for 2017 roms ie no launch flat foot shift or flex fuel. this may change though. The 2017 roms can be tuned but no additional features |

Still waiting for LC on the 2017s from OFT.. 😭

So for those like me who do not need launch, flat foot shift, auto blip, flex fuel, just an old fashioned road racing NA tune, OFT is fine on a '17?

my understanding is - technically yes you can use OFT with a 17'. You'll have to request the tunes, although he'll preload a new OFT with the 17's for you. It's not clear on the website; but people said their new ones had 17's tunes on them. I don't trust this and you can trigger the security thing if you flash a 16- onto a 17+. Oy. Beyond that, no; because logging isn't working; so there is no way to know how well the OFT tune is doing. Without this feedback, you are blindly trusting the received rom/tune. So my decision was that in addition to the above, Shiv isn't exactly being forthcoming with information/status/changes. So I consider OFT to not be compatible with 17+ |

ECU hardware in 2012-2017 cars is same. however their are significant changes in the ecu firmware (fueling/timing and secirity in the 2017, means the 2017 roms are not compatible with earlier cars and vice versa. The OFT hardware is capable of flashing and reading the 2017 cars no problems. the roms have been defined by oft guys or romraider guys so NA tuning is possible, just no code patches for extra features. If you contact shiv he will send you 2017 roms and definitions |
Wait it was my understanding that bot oft and ecutek didnit have features from racerom

their was a couple of early issues with ecutek 2017 racerom patch but been ok for many months now, was only on USA rom patch not Europe/Australia. Ive done a couple for 2017 guys here and features work fine |
