Can a nerdy white guy drive an FR-S?

Hey all, I really want an FR-S. I have been driving economy cars for ages. I am at a point in my life I can afford a nice car (hopefully under $25K before tax). I love the idea of a fun to drive, manual, RWD car that I can drive and enjoy for years and years. I consider myself a fan of nice cars, I know my way around, but I am not a serious gear head, more of an enthusiast. I am 6’2” tall 215 pounds, not muscular or intimidating in any way. I work with computers for a living. I don’t drive sitting off to the side with one hand on the wheel, maybe wearing a backwards baseball cap. Am I not “cool” enough to drive the FR-S? Am I getting myself involved in a community that I don’t belong in? I am certainly not into street racing or anything like that. Thanks for any feedback folks,

Jason

First thing, first, Welcome to the forum. Secondly, we have all kinds of race, age & etc members here. Full gear head running oil & gas in the blood vein to member that just barley get into sports car. Some are jacka** (like me), but most of em are nice, so feel free to ask around. We have tons of pc expert members here, so I'm pretty sure you'll get along.

C-Bone 05-05-2011 06:35 PM

No.... /thread. Haha just kidding, if you like something dont be scared off by what people may think or what YOU think they will be saying. if you want this car and can afford it, get it, who cares if someone thinks something negative. As ichi said, there are all different kinds on here so dont be shy, if you have questions, ask, someone will more than likely know the answer and most of all have fun

Zaku 05-05-2011 06:37 PM

Sounds like the SCION Douche bags made it seem like people like you as you described yourself can't drive SCION. That's not true, I don't see why you can drive the FR-S

Welcome

Random_Art 05-05-2011 06:38 PM

I'm a scrawny, nerdy type myself. Regardless of what the rednecks and media really want you to believe, enthusiasts and gearheads come from all walks of life. As long as you understand that it's more your attitude about life that determines "cool" and not the car you drive, you'll be fine. hell, in auto-shop back in high school, I got locked in the tool cage frequently by the rednecks just because I was the nerdy kid that was learning the material faster than they were.

You should have a blast carving through some of those twisty mountain roads around the San Francisco Bay area. I would suggest taking some sort of performance driving course beforehand if you're inexperienced with pushing a rear wheel drive car. The last thing you want is to end up in the side of a hill because you punched the accelerator too hard during a corner.

Nerdy white guys are always welcome here! :happy0180:

Kiteless 05-05-2011 06:50 PM

Hey thanks for the sound advice and warm welcome. If I can afford to I would love to take a driving class at a track or something with this car. I do plan on some "spirited" driving, but nothing I would think would be at the level of unsafe, especially in respect to the drivers I am sharing the road with. I just wish that other drivers felt the same way.

Again thanks for the good advice. I think of myself as an pretty "cool" easy going guy who really likes cars... And computers... and radio controlled things... and other super nerdy things.

cyde01 05-05-2011 07:58 PM

what? lol who cares what kind of person you are, if you like the car and have the money, go buy the car!!:bellyroll:

Jay Grey 05-05-2011 08:01 PM

Welcome Kiteless! Go for it bro... Join us & get the FR-S, then watch your nerd status go from 0 to 100 with the ladies. Lol! Words of advice my friend, always stay confident & believe in yourself!

El_STiG 05-05-2011 08:22 PM

Want a cool, rwd, sport, 25k car? Go get a Hyundai genesis r-spec. ;-)

john 05-05-2011 08:34 PM

There isn't a "coolometer" that measures your "coolness" in order to own the car.

This might just be a life changing experience for you. :)

If this is the first enthusiast forum you have joined, welcome to the life of petrol heads.

Matador 05-05-2011 08:35 PM

Almost had to check see if it was April 1 today. LMAO... welcome to the community.... as long as you are not a mac toting, hipster *** that hopes the FR-S won't be too "mainstream" you'll have fun here. lol.

[es vi: eks] 05-05-2011 09:19 PM

Welcome along dude and Of couse your welcome along here.

Burrcold 05-05-2011 09:34 PM

I wouldn't worry, most people who drive nice sporty cars are nerds at heart (especially ones that are on enthusiasts forums).

Midship Runabout 05-05-2011 09:37 PM

This car will pull all the bitches. Don't worry. You don't got to do a thing.

Kiteless 05-05-2011 10:04 PM

My gawd you guys are hilarious. Thanks for all the good vibes! I used to have a Subaru SVX and setup a SVX meetup locally here in the Bay Area. A lot of hard core SVX fans in that meetup and it went really well. Maybe I should setup an FRS meetup after it comes out.

n2oinferno 05-05-2011 10:25 PM

I'm nerdy, white, and work IT for a living. Nothing wrong with RWD light sporty goodness for me. :D

Neutral_Eyes 05-05-2011 10:27 PM

I sure hope so. Otherwise, I'll be in trouble. I've been through muscle cars, sport compacts, shitboxes, luxury euros, and never worried about the type of guy that "should" drive the car. If you like it, that's all that matters!

blewmax07 05-05-2011 11:24 PM

Kite..you think you have to look a certain way to drive a certain car? For you to ask that question makes me think that your self esteem is low? I'm not trying to be mean, but you can own whatever kind of car you want..f*** what everyone else thinks! Also, just remember....a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

ok so that has nothing to do with anything, but I just heard that on a commercial lol

Hey man I don't think its mean. What I mean to say is that while I consider myself a car guy I am not a street racer or a tuner. I had a 2002 Honda Civic Si back when they came out, and folks challenged me to street races. I'm just not that guy. But I think that the FR-S is a car I can enjoy. I'm not gonna baby it around, I wanna DRIVE. :)

Thanks again for all your feedback folks.

OldSkoolToys 05-06-2011 03:24 AM

Yes, yes he can.

I will soon be proof.

Though I'm like...60% dork and 40% nerd....ok, 55/45.

Speaking of this, I get the feeling some people here are into this revving engines at people street racing business. When I get a car I am going to be a safe, slow, law abiding driver. If you have a sporty car how often do you run into this, if you're not into the whole street racing thing?

cyde01 05-06-2011 03:59 AM

I'm 100% japanese and 0% nerd.. lol and I have dreads..

Honestly, People confuse me. When I had my non-sporty crap can of a civic people tried to race me all the time. Occasionally I would except the challenge from a red light race but I would always abandon it when I reached the speed limit. Though when I had my Celica, an actual sporty car, no one ever challenged me to races :iono:

Maybe it's just the ricy Civics that ever get challenged anymore?

Well I can tell you that i'm invisible to the street racing crowd in my Yaris. I guess what I am saying is that I don't want to get any attention from that crowd. But if I get this car or maybe a tC instead, its something I am gonna have to deal with from time to time. ignore em?

Random_Art 05-06-2011 12:06 PM

depends on how much you want to tempt fate. At this stage in my life, I say keep it to the track and ignore the idiots on the street

mkxr 05-06-2011 01:07 PM

Idiots racing on streets are just that, idiots. Few bad apples kill it for the rest of us, stricter laws, regulations, higher insurance premiums, etc. It really takes little skills to peel away when the light turns green, so what's the point? Nobody wins. One fun and competitive autox weekend can humble the best of us (I'm not the best, not even close though). It is fun to be a geek in a Honda Fit, and pull better raw times than the 'cool' dudes in a Mustang GT.
I'd rather be an understated nerd, liking what I drive, and drive it for fun, than some poser rolling around in a $200k car just for show.

Tell me about it. I live behind a Lamborghini Dealership and every time I see one driving down the road I can only think to my self "hey look! There goes money!"

I have money on Japanese Hair Wax.

But back to OP.

I don't get why you added "white" to it. Lol but tbh, I'd prefer a nerd driving the FRS than a little highschool ricer who tries to start a race at every red light. Lol

I mean, I don't mean to sound like racist or anything. I am about as far from racist as possible. I can't think of the last time I dated someone who was white actually. :D I guess I started this thread hoping I would get the exact kind of feedback I have been getting. Breaking down my perception that generally, only mean, aggressive, homophobic, misogynistic jerks, regardless of race, drive street tuner or what ever, kinds of cars. Not that I thought everyone is like that. I don't like broad sweeping generalizations like that.

But you folks have happily proven me wrong as I hoped and suspected I was and I feel a lot better about getting something like an F-RS than I ever have.

I say this every post in this thread but thanks again for all the feedback!

A man with good taste

It would be cool to have at lot of FRS/FT86/Subbie rwd meet ups around the world.
Even cooler would be FT86 only racing comp at some tracks.
