6speed shift knob

Anyone else noticed that their shift knob won't stay tight?
Also noticing that my plastic emblem on top is lifting.

Got in the car and the shift knob was loose, haddnt touched it at all, didn't notice it being loose while driving beforehand. It has been about +25/30 here for the past week. Started to gently tighten it back to normal and noticed that the plastic emblem was starting to lift and separate so I backed it off. It wasn't even getting tight at this point.

I will be taking it to the dealer to see what they say.

Blue86 07-21-2012 06:19 AM

Sorry to hear about your knob problems :bellyroll:

mine is fine and I haven't seen this issue come up so far from others, worth getting the dealer to sort t out obviously

Pscylo 07-21-2012 06:51 AM

My factory knob is in the globe box...was the first thing I swapped.

subaruferrucci 07-21-2012 07:16 AM

the factory shift knob doesnt have a hard wall for the shaft to bottom out on. It bottoms out on the plastic 6 speed emblem. Back it off one rotation and the emblem should start to go down. I went one further and put some lock tight on mine it started to mess me up while racing my hand would go flying off the shifter because it would rotate

Hanzo 07-21-2012 10:09 AM

Mine top cap lifts up easy as well if i try to pull it off with my finger nail. If it start to lift up too easy I am going to put some glue under the cap.

notFRS 07-21-2012 12:42 PM

Thanks guys.
My guess is that the hot weather caused the glue to loosen.

Will be showing it to the dealer and seeing what they can do. I plan on getting an aftermarket knob anyways, just want something not-shitty in the meantime while it is made/shipped.

Bonburner 07-22-2012 05:47 AM

I've had mine rotate on me, but nothing on the actual gear mappin coming up/off

Phaedrus29 07-22-2012 02:46 PM

Good excuse for a cool aftermarket knob ;)

Take some Teflon tap and wrap the threads a few times so that it will get tight prior to it touching the emblem. If you need, do several wraps 4-5 or more. Each wrap will slightly decrease the amount of turns to get the knob tight and should add some resistance to coming loose. Plus temperature won't effect it and you won't have to use lock tight.

Bonburner 07-22-2012 03:07 PM

But I like how the shift knob looks, not interested in an aftermarket knob

eriktherod 07-23-2012 02:58 AM

One does not simply post pictures of awesome shift knobs without links and/or purchase options!

Already jumped on the group buy for this, waiting for it to be engraved and ship. More of an annoyance that OEM parts are falling apart with 2000kms on the car...
flossy Shift Knob
flossy knobs group buy
group buy is done now though.

That's what I've done for now, I had to do this in my civic with an aftermarket knob and the boot adapter because the shift pattern wouldn't align correctly.

Really seems like all the cars I own have problems with the shift knobs,
06 civic SI, scratched to shit just by looking at it.
01 jetta, poor "leather" quality,
BRZ, see above. Good excuse to purchase an aftermarket knob though.

eriktherod 07-23-2012 03:58 AM

Bwhaha, the 06+ Si shift knob WAS crap and scratched from absolutely nothing. I got the Greddy/Trust Billet style one to replace it, well worth it.

I gave in just moments ago to get a WC Lathe Werks one in stainless gunmetal finish for the FR-S. Can't wait to get it in and put it on! Love me a nice, heavy metal shift knob.

#87 07-23-2012 04:05 AM

Mine was 1 turn loose on delivery, just turned it and been fine since.

xwd 07-23-2012 08:55 AM

Yeah mine was 1 turn loose as well and it would not tighten up, so I also put some Teflon tape on the threads. Replaced it with a copolymer piston knob from Wx lathe werks.

Check out the thread for more info on the group buy! Hurry!

I would like a classier looking lid on my automatic, looks so cheap!

Scaldy 07-30-2012 12:46 AM

I'm glad I found this thread. My top has separated... probably because of the heat. I was going to ask the dealer, but it sounds like I should try super glue first.

eriktherod 07-30-2012 01:10 AM

You could glue it I'm sure. Honestly, unless you're attached to the OEM knob, replace it. It just feels so much better with a nicer knob!

Trojan_SC 07-30-2012 01:55 AM

TRD shift knob? Those are nice and look similar to the OEM one.

CrazyWookiee 07-30-2012 05:57 PM

Mine was pretty lose on my first drive. I turned it one turn clock wise and it seems to be tighter now. Might just be in my head though.

chessplaya2010 07-31-2012 02:37 PM

anyone feel that the area of the shifter is under lighted (dark....) it makes it hard to see whats in/around the 'missing' arm rest area.. including the shifter and surroundings... closest lights i believe come from the radio...

jarviz 07-31-2012 04:24 PM

I can't decide between the FLossy knob or the TRD knob.... gawddd!!!!

CzRceCar 08-01-2012 12:14 AM

Had mine replaced after it popped the emblem off.. second knob loosened after the first drive to Hocking Hills Ohio... lock tight soon after that lol

If it's between those two, the Flossy one. I think the big ball shape is better than the TRD one. I have my stainless steel knob from WC Lathe Werks and the shape is awesome. Gives a real good feel to it.

Just put in the pearl finished Team Voodoo knob...its hard to describe how awesome this knob A) Feels and B) Looks. The finish is impossible to capture in a picture. It's has this light refracting thing going on, needless to say its better in person. As for feel you really can "feel" what the tranny is doing and since it sits alot lower on the stalk the shifts are shorter and tighter.

Absolutely love this knob!

Do you notice the difference in weight? The voodoo knob is noticeably lighter than the standard one.

Supermassive 08-01-2012 03:11 AM

It is lighter, but the weight is lower...if that makes sense...

To be honest the Team Voodoo knob feels more substantial in your hand and the shifts feel more...mechanical...I guess that's a good word for it. I think the weight of the stock knob and how high its mounted absorbs some of the vibrations you would feel otherwise. The TV knob doesn't feel buzzy at all, instead it feels like a direct connection to the gearbox.

I guess its all preference but really really like this knob. The only shortcoming I could see is that its a glossy smooth finish and hand sweat could make for some "interesting" shifting.

jarviz 08-01-2012 04:35 PM

Anybody have thoughts on the flossy rod shifters?

So how does the pearl match up color-wise to the silver trim in the car?

It's the one I want if it's close!

Supermassive 08-01-2012 06:45 PM

Its pretty close, the trim is a darker silver, I'll try and take some daytime pics so i have better contrast and you can see the difference. I think it goes well with the interior, at first i thought it would be lighter and i was worried that it might stick out but once i got it put on it looks like it came with the car!

Looks very cheap. They should've put the same lid as they did with the manual. Without the shift pattern of course

Midnight Run 08-01-2012 08:38 PM

I will be putting my BLOX 490 Spherical NEO Shift Knob in good use. :)

490 grams and 50mm in diameter. Big and heavy!

Wow, this went offtopic in a hurry.

Post your shift knob options/reviews/other random complaints that have nothing to do with the seperating shfit knob somewhere else.
