Synchros going bad?

Sometimes when changing from 4th to 5th the shifter gets stuck and doesn't want to move, and when I force it it makes a loud grinding noise.

Are synchros considered wear items? I'll take it to the dealership tomorrow.

Doesn't it fall under powertrain warranty though? I have powertrain warranty until 100k miles.

ggiddix 07-20-2017 06:52 PM

If you can prove that it was defective then maybe, but they will just say you abused the clutch or grinded the gears and then won't cover it

I'd leave that part out when I explain the problem to the dealer.

Shinigami301 07-20-2017 08:12 PM

Does it still do it when you double-clutch? Are you trying to power shift? Or speed-shift?

Yeah and no, just normal driving. It doesn't happen all the time though, just every now and then, but today it happened when I went from 1th to 2nd, and sometimes it doesn't want to go on 1th either. I'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow because my frs has been making a rattle noise when I'm on first and under 1.5k rpms, it started after I got my TOB replaced.

gravitylover 07-20-2017 08:48 PM

^^ Sounds like something is misaligned. The clue is that it started after the tob was replaced. Hopefully that hasn't caused undue wear on other parts.

humfrz 07-20-2017 08:57 PM

I'll ask an obvious question ....... then refer you to @Ultramaroon

Do you have a short shifter installed .. ??

No. Everything is stock on this car.

Teseo 07-20-2017 10:21 PM

Firs change fluid, drive for a while. Also at what rpms you are shifting?

Good point!

However, first off ...... check the fluid level to make sure the folks that installed the new TOB put oil back in the transmission........

***How many miles after your TOB replacement now?

Rattling noise at low RPM may or may not be normal. By itself I would say nothing wrong. Factory gear lube is super thick in an effort to keep it quiet.

If the transmission was under-filled That would make shifting more notchy and picky, especially after it gets hot.

I'm not an expert with dealer service interaction and I'm suspicious of other peoples' work. That said, If you have any intention of following up with a warranty claim, do... not... touch... anything.

The TOB was replaced 700 miles ago. I'll check the the fluids tomorrow before I take it to the dealer.

Do you know how, and have the tools to do that? It's not trivial.

No, but I'll watch a video on youtube or something. I have nothing to do today anyways

I think he was talking about checking the transmission oil level.

What's difficult about that ... ??

You have to stick your finger in it.

It's probably just me, but I find putting this car up on jack stands to be a pain in the ass. When I installed the exhaust recently, I had to jack the front up enough to get the stands under the hard points at their lowest level, then jack the back up, then jack the front up again to get the car raised where I could fit my fat ass up under it. I have some transmission work in my near future, and I'm honestly not looking forward to it at all. This time I'm getting my 12 ton stands I usually use for the Jeeps out of the warehouse and raising that SOB up high.

Of course it's covered under warranty. I had my transmission replaced after about 1000 miles because of a bad fifth gear syncro. 108,000 miles later it's still good.

Well, you certainly do it the hard way ....... ;)

The humfrz way is quite easy.

Simply drive the car up to the local good ol boys auto shop, give them the key and ask them to check the transmission oil level, have a cup of coffee, before you finish the coffee ..... they have checked the oil level. No charge, since I'm a regular. See how easy that is ...... :D

Well, it's their pinky finger, which I doubt was "there"......:D

Besides, my transmission don't care ...... :iono:

DAMN! ......it's a good thing I quit drinken ...... if not, a large glass of vodka with a splash of bloody Mary mix would be in order ........ the music of the Wiggles, with all three granddaughters singing along, is about to drive me nuts ...... :brokenheart:

There was always the option of asking in the Tech Subs where threads (usually) go unmolested.

started with OP wandering about his gearbox.

Didn't want to jack your other thread.

If you looked into it and decided to pass on diy fluid check, I think it's still worth the peace of mind to pay for it. I'm guessing less than 40 bucks. Would rule out worst case.

Damn this thread is full of ADHD...That being said, I went to the dealer complaining about a grinding noise when shifting 3-4 in high revs. They said they would replace the synchros, but not the transmission. I wonder if this will have the same positive affect as your transmission replacement.
