Why I'm glad I got my FRS (And why you should pull the trigger if you want one.)

Before I get into this I want to state that I am no Doug DeMuro, I just turned 18 in March and I have only driven THREE cars in my entire life. a 2007 Honda Odyssey, 2005 Volvo S60 and a few 2013 FRS' before pulling the trigger on my Ultramarine Beauty that you can see in my signature.

I'd also like to point out that I learned how to drive in the FRS. Upon turning 18 I was granted a drivers license through DMV by completing my driving test in the FRS.

Before I ever sat behind the wheel of one of these cars I really had no interest in pursuing my own or even had an interest in cars or Motorsports in general. I didn't know much about cars back then and to be completely honest I'm no guru now. When I first came onto these forums as a potential buyer of the vehicle a lot of the members on here actually told me to not go for it due to my age and how new of a driver I was. I'm extremely happy I went for it.

I'm not sure if it's a new driver thing or a first car thing, but there isnt a single time I park my car and I don't snap my head 3 or 4 times to look at it, there's not a single time I sit behind the wheel and turn the ignition and not smile. Getting this car has opened up so many doors that has been really cool to experience. I've had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people both on the road and online. Just a few weeks after getting my license I met up with a fellow forum user from the DMV on here and they are someone who'd I'd consider a pretty good friend now, I've had the opportunity to go to a few local meets and meet other owners and to me I feel like that's one of the most important things about owning this car and being able to get involved in the amazing community behind it.

As I had mentioned earlier I haven't driven too many cars in my lifetime but the enjoyment behind the wheel that this car has given me is unmatched. I live in an area where I'm surrounded by mountains to drive and nothing beats the feeling of getting into the halfway point of a turn and putting the throttle down and sling-shotting in and out of the turns and corners. Of course there are many cars on the market that can give you this feel but for the price (drove mine off the lot for $17,500) and how openly you can truly make the car yours you can't go wrong.

The platform is truly unique and I feel like there is a very strong negative bias about the car until people actually sit behind the wheel and drive one themselves.

If you're in the market for a car of this genre go get one while they're hot :burnrubber:

Tcoat 06-15-2017 10:20 PM

I have owned 40 or so cars and still stop and look at this one every time I park.
I also would like to thank you for proving that there are indeed many good, reasonable and intelligent teens on this forum.
Respect!

Due to the nature of my job with fleet cars, I have driven hundreds of different car models. The vast majority being 21st century modern cars, more accurately from 2007 to today. Price range is from something as dinky as a Mitsubishi Mirage to a Maserati Quattroporte.

This was the only car I was convinced to actually go out and buy new. Had this car not existed, I likely still would've never have bought a new car.

Fun fact, despite so many people bashing it for being slow, this is probably one of the fastest cars I've actually driven. Kind of made easy when everything full size and down I've driven is slower, every mainstream CUV is generally slow, normal and heavy duty pickup trucks and cargo vans which aren't slow but also not really fast, and today's minivans are a smidgen slower as they're legitimately quick without cargo. Only the expensive turbo stuff or stuff with really big high output engines I've seen easily out muscle this car. Its not even the slowest sporty coupe I've driven, because I've driven a Camaro V6 soft top...that felt quite slow probably because its too heavy and the Challenger V6...that too wasn't fast.

I'm with tcoat, I've had lots of cars, even been part owner of pure race cars, and this car is very cool. I couldn't imagine having something this cool at your age. Good job. Stay responsible.

Btw, you also have the best color.

I hope to keep my FRS for a long long time, It's going to be my Daily for a long time so by the time I'd need to get a family car down the road etc. etc. It wont be worth much unless these turn into the next Surpra or something

Thank you so much though, A lot of people bashed me for being interested in the car because of the Boy-Racer mindset a lot of youngsters like me have. I won't lie the first few weeks I had the car I was driving like quite an ***hole and launching it etc etc, but I'm a bit past that at this point, It's taught me a lot about driving just pushing the car and seeing how it will react in certain ways, I'm absolutely in love with it

I was extremely set on white when I decided that this was the car I wanted (I was up against either getting a 2009 350z or a 2010-2012 Miata) and when I went in person and saw the Orange "Hot Lava" in person that was the first FRS I had driven and the color popped, but man when I saw the Ultramarine in person it really hit me. Pictures don't do it justice, driving at night with the Ultramarine as well is such a lux color and when light hits it at night and it flakes back at you with that purple shine you just stand there like :confused0068:

And as for my age and all, I actually started driving this car about midway through my Senior year and I just graduated High School a few weeks ago, I come from a smallish town so I was snapping heads left and right and attracting civics all day :burnrubber::lol::lol:

Every new car I ever bought befor the twin was white. I had every intention on buying a white one, then I saw the sapphire one.

I am so glad I didn't get white. At every 86 meet I've been at more than half are white.

One freind of mine says every time he sees my car it is a different color. I love my ultramarine twin.

I feel like the ultramarine is literally a color changing car depending on where you park it and the light that hits it. At the car wash the other day it was maybe midnight or one in the morning and I was just doing a late night pressure wash and the light made my car look a VERY vibrant purple, it was awesome.

Because I'm a Dad, I have to ask if you are or are planning on getting performance driving instruction. I know it's cliche but I think back to being 18 and driving mountain roads in a much more forgiving car and wonder how the hell I lived through it.

Also, kudos for realizing what is important is how You feel about Your car and not what anyone else thinks.

humfrz 06-16-2017 03:00 AM

Hello VoltsFRS2013, good to hear you're happy with your machine ..... :)

Congratulations on you graduating from high school......

Now, I suggest you focus your attention on future education or training for a career.

You will most likely always remember growing up with this car, and after it gets too small and you go through a series of SUVs, Vans, Pickup trucks, more SUVs ...... you will be able to get another one ...... sort of like it ...... although it may run on hydrogen and be self driving .....

Hey @Tcoat and @Ultramaroon ...... shall we tell the young-ens about drum brakes, manual steering, biased ply tires, small shocks, 6 volt headlights, no turn signals, no ABS, or TC or ESC or rear view cameras or fog lights or seat belts or air bags or ........

We just won't talk about gravel roads, bald retreaded tires, worn out brake shoes, leaking shocks, broken springs, ........

If we did, they just may give us a ..... ...... just for being alive ...... :D

Don't forget soft leaf springs on a solid rear axle causing wallowing in corners and wheel hop and potentially snapped driveshafts and pinions from excessive axle wrap on acceleration.

Makes for great suspension articulation in the 4x4 world, but muscle cars don't care for it.

Thank you! and If it makes you feel any better the one road I usually drive on the mountain is a road that I've probably been passenger on maybe 1,000 times making trips back and forth from my home to northern virginia as a kid, I would love to hit a track with a more experienced driver or coach but at the moment that all just depends on $$$.

I've tried to stray away from doing anything extremely dangerous and to be quite fair I've never really pushed the car to a point where I feel like I may be inches away from the rear end giving out on a turn or anything crazy like that, and with the season we're currently in the amount of Deer out on back roads and mountains is crazy and I couldn't imagine the look of my car after slamming into a Deer (although I'm sure someone will post a picture soon to follow  ) so for that reason I've kept it quite cool

After owning several American Sports Cars and then switching to Toyota Trucks in 1996 I was waiting for a Japanese Sports Car I could afford. The Supra was out of my price range and in 2013 I got to drive an FR-S of someone I knew and I got that feeling back of driving a RWD sports car, this time it was Japanese. I got my 2016 in 2015 and have enjoyed every second of it.

Enjoy your FR-S!

Come on now, I'm only 26 and I've experienced plenty of old buckets!
I had a 68 C20 for a while. 4 wheel drum, garbage suspension, manual steering, a metric ton of rust....

Worst thing I ever drove was a 52 ford pickup with manual brakes and a 3 speed. The clutch felt like I was doing a 1000lb leg press.

Yousend 06-16-2017 02:21 PM

I felt the same way OP. I used to like driving because I got to see new places and nice views. Gave me some me time too. Then I went car free because I worked downtown and public transit was better.

The day I got laid off I missed my bus and decide to cross the street to the Toyota dealer, remembering how I enjoyed driving. Figure I'd just go test drive a Corolla. Walk in, see the FR-S right in front. Look at the price tag. "Wow, that's cheap for such a nice car"... Too bad I need a new job. Get a new job but it's not practical due to the location of the new job.

Two years later, I get a job that's a long commute but has parking. Walk in, point at the FR-S. I was still dreaming about it daily. Doing a yearly test drive. Pulling the trigger was the best decision of my life. I am still in love with the car, I can't picture myself in another econobox. A new world had opened to me. Joy rides are more frequent than before, a new hobby has been found. I am a very frugal person, except when it comes to gas and food. Car is a new hobby, but there's a lot of convincing myself when I buy parts. I'm happy with the way it drives, I just did the basic cosmetics wheels, lights and exhaust. My build is complete.

FR-S will always have a special place in my heart. It's a shame so few people care about their driving experience and would rather complain about driving than to get a fun car because they want to save on gas.

It won't really be recognized for what a really stellar car it is until it's gone. Not many cars today that a normal human can afford are aimed at just having fun. Two generations now have grown up with cars being nothing more than a "transportation appliance". The FR-S/BRZ/86 is an affordable oddity.

Buy one.

This.

And.

Your writing belies your age - clearly you have a talent for expressing yourself cogently.

Congrats on a great car, and a formidable brain . . .

. . . that would have you choose this awesome car, and opine about it so eloquently.
