'17 new 86 oil pressure light on with low idle
Just got my new '17 a few weeks ago not even broken in yet. Yesterday low oil pressure light comes on when im sitting at idle.
Idle is kinda low at 600 rpms. If I blip the the throttle the light goes away. Checked oil hot it is actually a little over the full mark. Guessing I should try to drain about a half a quart out first and possibly reset the computer since the low idle might be caused by a new intake pipe installed. Otherwise no issues engine sounds and runs great. Just checking to see if anyone else has this issue or a fix before I have my car sitting for days at a dealership. Thanks in advance -Tom |
I would get it to the dealer and keep a record just incase. Some of the older models had some injector issues and low idle rpm's and check engine was two signs.....I am not saying this is your problem but having a 2 week old one myself it is good to read on here and be pro active just incase.

Yeah would think bugs would be worked out on these by now but since it is slightly upgraded with new HP there could be new bugs. Still going to try to get a little oil out since ive read in other car forums too much oil can cause low pressure as well. And will try to reset the ecu so it learns the new intake . If these don't work I will have to suck it up and waste my day off in a dealership. |
Are you a complete moron? You bought the car 2 weeks ago, you get an oil light and you're doing ANYTHING EXCEPT tell the dealership to send a tow truck and haul off their problem? This is a joke right?

But Tom you are right that you will need a day off to deal with a dealer 22R |

These cars are hard to get a good oil reading on. I'd leave it as is and get it to the dealer.
The more you mess with it the more likely it is that they'll blame you. |
I doubt that having the oil level slightly above the fill line is causing the issue. Mine has been above that line in the past and never had oil light come on at idle but my idle is around 700 rpm. Also, I have read the oil light does not come on unless the pressure is really really low. I'd just get it to the dealer this week since these engines have been known to self destruct from oil starvation issues.(but call them and see if they give you the ok to drive it there)

I don't think you're a moron but I'd not drive it and call the dealer to have them pick it up and get a free rental until it's fixed.

Look and see if you knocked the sending unit wire off while you where installing your intake.

The 15s have very little history of oil issues. |

It all depends if it is fixed free under warranty at the dealer , or if you like burning your own money on an engine that could soon deploy in pieces all over the road!

did you not read the light only comes on at 600 rpm and is flickering at 700 rpm. If I blip the throttle it goes away. I will take the others advice and check to make sure something was not plugged in the morning. |

Im rearly hoping its just a faulty sender. Ring dealer imediatly , dont drive the car. I wouldnt let on to the dealer you have been driving it for days with that issue as they could likely use that against you if their is any serious damage. That light should never ever come on in normal operation of the car even at idle and efen at 500 rpm let alone at 600 or 700. |
I'm sure such low pressure would make for a noisy valve train and maybe stumbling since the VVT needs oil to properly function? Unless our VVT is electronically adjusted? I never got into the VVT in our cars.I'm thinking it's just a sensor issue as said above.

Solved!
thankfully I looked into this before overreacting and screaming at the dealership to come tow my lemon away but the error is mine.
Looks like this pinched vacuum line to the pcv valve? was most likely the culprit. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...pswyp1eyn1.jpg Also did what I said I was going to last night and reset the ecu. Added some dielectric grease to keep them rust free while the terminals were off. Also check the oil levels cold and hot. Cold http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...pswiikchp3.jpg Hot after settling 10 mins after. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...pswjnrjxln.jpg Took it for a spirited run. Idle is right around 650 rpms with NO LIGHT! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...psnpbz6jz7.jpg |
Glad you have it worked out... Nice looking Vette to BTW. Enjoy the rides
