Potential new FR-S owner
Hey guys,
I just got back from putting a (refundable) deposit on a used 2013 red FR-S 6MT with 35,000 miles. Car drove fine, nothing really stood out compared to other Twins I have driven. Going to go back on Saturday with pre-approved financing from my credit union and look at the car in the daylight. They are asking for $15500 which is lower than most, although it's winter still and this is a small used lot not a new car franchise Mods include CF shark-fin, Quad exhaust tips, tinted windows. There's also a sub-installed in the trunk which I will either have them keep for a cheaper price or just sell...it takes up pretty much the whole trunk Is this a good deal for a late 2013 model? I will be having them take the car to a Toyota dealer for an inspection but I figure I can knock off a few hundred if they remove the aftermarket stereo Hope to have one of my own very soon! I've been looking for awhile and all the good deals for these seem to be automatic :bonk: so finding a manual at this price seems almost too good to be true:clap: |
Look like you have covered all the bases and the price is pretty good for your region. If it checks out at inspection you should be driving it soon.
|
Watch this guy above, he's from Canada and put's the letter "u" into words that shouldn't have them!
|
Yeah I've been doing my research. This is a great resource, I've wanted one since they've came out and now that I have been saving and building my credit for two years after college it's time.
This is going to be my second Subaru that isn't badged as such! Lmao |
Sounds good ......... geeeeeeet itttttttt!

make sure all the recalls were taken care of. Wasn't there something about one being absolutely imperative and they would not do it once it was out of warranty? Didn't this just come up recently? Only way I would know about it is reading it on here.

Yes I have a Saabaru (no turbo though) lol
What's the important recall? If it's a recall don't they have to fix it out of warranty? Or do you mean TSB? |

That's a pretty good deal. I paid similar money for mine with under 25k miles.
|
the 2013's had a TSB for cam sprocket issues and ecu fault code p0016-p0019. I just got mine fixed under warranty. Barely. 52k miles 4 years. cutoff is 60k 5 years. And it's a very common issue with the '13s around the same miles as mine. My dealer even said so. If I was in the market, I would avoid the '13s like mine unless the tsb was performed or something.

Well I am hoping for the best on the ppi. This is my first RWD car so I am easing into it
Cars I have previously I've had/ driven 2001 Sienna (dad totaled) 2001 Prius (first car that I drove, was a beater for a few years but junked due to rust and my sister's neglect) 2004 Prius (worst car ever I would have rather had the 2001 but my mom gave me the '04 eventually the battery died and it wasn't worth fixing) After those miserable piles I started buying my own cars: 1999 Maxima Se (miss it would love another) 2005 Saabaru 5MT (current ride) I love that the FR-S is a Toyota and a Subaru at the same time because I'd probably be going for a newer WRX if the twins didn't exist. This way I can keep my Saabaru since it's only at 100k |

1) Some ATs had a wire off that allowed you to remove the key while running. If you can't pull your key out then you are OK. 2) Recall from Southeast Toyota only. Added accessories not indicated on weight capacity sticker so sticker reads 5 to 10 pounds light. One for Subaru: 1)Engine Control Module Reprogramming Vehicles Registered in the States of CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA. Reprogram ECU the monitor engine coolant temperature better and turn CEL on if not reaching operating temp. None earth shattering. If you bought your car from a dealer and it is registered through Toyota/Subaru you will receive notifications of any recalls. TSBs are NOT recalls in any form. They are simply instructions to the Techs on how to fix known issues. The car needs to be exhibiting the problem when brought in for them to fix it. Even then they are in no way forced to do the work even if in warranty. You can not just take your car in and say "there is a TSB so fix it" based just on the TSB ( although some dealers have been reported to do it). http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21868 |
Hmm well I should be good then because I am buying a manual.
I used to drive automatics but I forget how/ I don't know if I can learn how to. Lmao that's what I tell my girlfriend when she wants me to drive her car, that if she refuses to learn stick I refuse to learn automatic |

As for the PPI on the Scion, it checked out well, only things car needs is new tires and battery so I am going to have them include a new set of either Continental DWS 06 or Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s and a new battery for the price we agreed on. Still has factory tires and battery the story goes it was traded in for an Acura MDX to be a better family car. His loss, my gain :) I got the service history of the vehicle and they said that the fuel pump was replaced because of the crickets already. No outstanding recalls |
are autos really dropping that much faster than MT? or is it simply the demand for MTs?
|
The deals can be found! You just have to be patient
|
I'm not sure of the price of automatics because I usually filter to manual only anytime I go car shopping.
|
I've been shopping FRS around DC for a few months, following all the used car websites and the AT are definitely cheaper here. I finally settled on a 14 MT with 11k miles for $19.2k. It even had TRD CAI and exhaust from the original sale and is CPO so I'm pretty happy.
The deals are out there and the AT's are definitely going for less. Oh, and I can't tell you how many crappy un-mod jobs I looked at or paint over sprayed fender liners, etc. Check the Carfax! Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk |
I bought my frs for 15700 cad without taxes and everything. (With that and finance it was 21 grand CAD)
At first I was looking at 2 frses and a brz. Brz had a lot of mileage but I liked the brz more.the 2 frses were stock and no accidents which is what I wanted. At first, didn't like the one I ended up buying. It had injen intake a wrapped carbon fibre hood and smoked out tails. I went it go test drive it for fun. I wasn't being serious but in person, it made me stare at it for a while. It was for 17999 CAD. Being picky, I called out every single thing that wasn't perfect. I really pissed off the sales guy from Toyota. Was able to lower it to 15700. At first he didn't want to change my tail lights but because of ontarios safety test, it failed. So they had to put new tail lights on it. If I was you. I'd look around see if there is anything else but the deal you have is pretty good. Check tires, ask about the service history, ask for car proof, check the interior (if the red part of the seat is worn out. Look under the front bumper and see if there are any scratches on the bottom of the bumper (they will usually fix that for free if you ask for it). Feel the clutch and see if it makes any weird noises. Those are just some things you should discuss them with the sales guy, it can save you lots of bucks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Dont buy. Wait for new civic type R

The civic type R is in a whole different price bracket. It's at least twice as much as what a used FR-S goes for.
I am waiting on the dealer to receive the title from the bank and then I'll have my new to me FR-S shortly assuming that process doesn't get held up...the anticipation is killing me |
Civic is more practical but that's it. One of my friends has a civic si 2015 and yea I know it isn't the type r but it isn't that great. It's bland. Older civics are better. But nothing tops the smiles per gallon you get from the frs at that price range.

Besides it has 3 tail pipes ......:w00t: I think I'll order mine in RED! :happyanim: humfrz |
Isn't there a forum for FRS/BRZ vs. X?
Everyone i have mentioned to that I am about to get an FR-S is saying "get an STI/ WRX" or "get a GTI or Focus ST" Umm no...I desire an impractical RWD vehicle. Hondas just don't do it for me anyways and the radio looks impossible to swap for an aftermarket which is a deal-breaker |
Quote:
Everyone you mention it to obviously likes to read bench racing reviews and look at number comparisons. If you want big numbers then listen to them. Otherwise tell them to buy their own car. |

So to update I picked up the car two weeks ago. So far I've ordered center console badge for the blank space, husky liners, and new cabin air filter and engine air filters.
Drives great, I had Toyota do an oil change and Ecu Update for the idle TSB just in case since it was free Only "problem" is my MPG average is quite poor 25mpg. I have brand new tires though and it's been quite wet here. Should improve when it warms up and I have the chance to take it on longer trips. I'm trying to figure out where to mount my phone (for Waze)...I was going to swap the stereo but I actually like the stock system and it sounds ok with a 10" sub in the trunk...I may try a CD player mount since the vent one I use in my other car doesn't work here |
Browse the whole TSB sticky section, print any out that even remotely might apply, and bring them to your local dealer and have them check to see if they've been done yet. No sense dealing with something down the road that might already have a fix for it.
If you're actually in the Greater Boston area, 25mpg isn't too bad considering the type of driving involved in there. I mainly commute between Worcester and Westboro on Rt9, which basically consists of sitting at traffic lights for 2 or 3 cycles, then zooming up to 65 and then sitting at the next set of lights, and I average about 28. If I actually get out onto the highway to go somewhere, mileage is well into the mid 30's. |
Quote:
Nope, the MPG more than likely won't get a whole lot better. I'm at 27.5 mpg with mostly highway miles.Oddly enough,I was at 27.7 before I put in a TRD air filter, then it dropped to 27.4. As for a phone mount,I bought one that mounts to the CD player opening, since I never use that thing anyway. https://www.amazon.com/Mpow-Holder-U...er+phone+mount Works pretty damn good. |
Yeah I'll take a scroll through the rest of the TSBs. The fuel pump on th car was replaced and I make sure to fill up at 1/4 tank (or sooner).
In regards to the mileage I take a combination of route 1 and 128 so a lot of stop and go. I suppose it could be worse. I've been trying to limit driving the FRS to work 1 or two days a week, but of course I'm doing most of my personal driving with it. Might get a chance this weekend to do a mini road trip and see what the car can do there. |
The gearing is short on these, so there's a big difference in highway mileage depending on how fast you're going.

Ended up ordering something similar. Also I was at CVS and found one of those FRS diecast models for $6 the same color as my car, couldn't pass it up lol. Ended up driving to downtown Boston and tanking my MPG even more go figure. It was cool seeing people "check me out in the car" definitely noticing that happening more than with past rides, the red certainly stands out. |
Just wait til you get a UEL and tune. Then you'll really see your mileage tank lmao.

If you can pop on the cruise control at 75mph or lower for a FULL tank you'll hit 30+ mpg no problem. |
