Car swaying left right (floating feeling) highway speeds

Lately I noticed on highway speeds 60-65mph (higher if i'm following the flow of traffic in the fast lane) my fr-s feels as if it slightly swaying side to side almost as if the wind was blowing it really hard making it feel as if the car is floating

tires are inflating up to spec of 35psi...alignment was done earlier this year...car is fully stock mechanically speaking. 2015 w/ just under 25K miles

any ideas? probably need to get another alignment?

go_a_way1 10-04-2016 11:56 AM

It is a light car so could be just the wind maybe??

maybe ruts in the road??

it happens taking the highway to work and back everyday so far i noticed..tried different lanes just as a test and experienced the same thing

almost feels as if the car will snap the steering wheel feeling unstable...the best way i can compare it is as if i was driving on gravel

Tofurky 10-04-2016 12:03 PM

alignment?

Stang70Fastback 10-04-2016 12:03 PM

That sounds like an alignment issue to me. If it was an older car I would suggest checking your bearings, because a worn/failing bearing would cause the same thing to occur (for the same reason, as it basically allows the hub to move around causing your alignment to constantly change.) I wouldn't bother chasing down other issues until confirming that the alignment is correct. It's possible you don't remember hitting a bump, but maybe you did hit something that threw the alignment off, or slightly bent a tie rod or something. Sounds like a classic case of poor alignment.

come to think of it there was this speed bump on a neighborhood road (i was not familiar with) that didn't really seem like a speed bump...it looked like small incline in the road as if it was recently patched but when i went over it i felt the car slammed down pretty hard so that might have been the culprit

i'll have the alignment checked first

'ppreciate it!

go_a_way1 10-04-2016 12:43 PM

Yeah maybe its the alignment

+1 for alignment. I had my rear toe adjustment knocked out on one side and it felt like I was driving on ice.

JazzleSAURUS 10-04-2016 03:42 PM

Sounds like an alignment. If you've put on a lot of miles since this issue began take a look at your tread wear in the meantime to see if it's uneven on an edge, or if it's cupping/feathering.

i had a F150 rental for a month then when i got my fr-s back the steering felt stiff in a good way and it handled like it was on rails (had my fr-s back now for almost a month so i didn't put a lot of miles on it...handling was fine when i dropped it off at the body shop)...started noticing last week the swaying and the steering started to feel loose but i'm thinking my muscles got used to the tighter steering of the fr-s again versus the lightweight steering of a F150

i'll check out the tire tread too and make sure everything looks proper

Manic 10-04-2016 06:25 PM

Could be tramlining as well. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=47

I experience it on specific sections of the highway I commute. Usually sections with those parallel grooves vs flat asphalt.

Is it a he, or a bot?

My car feels that way when driving on certain parts of the freeway (road gratings). My car has less than 300 miles on it.

the "OEM" alignment isn't very good either. there's a wide range of acceptable numbers

Ya .....making babies, tending to the other children, doing the wash with a wringer washer, baking bread, putting up preserves, canning green beans and tomatoes, making pickles, sweeping the floor with a broom, frying chicken, gathering eggs, slopping the hogs, feeding the chickens, filling up the coal oil lamps, hanging out laundry on a line, washing windows, ironing clothes, washing the dishes ........ THEN, after they brought us an iced tea out on the porch, they could take a break.....yep, the good ol days.

I'll throw out a couple of other possibilities even though the problem is probably alignment. I agree with everyone else, but there's a possibility it could be something else.

-put the car on jack stands and inspect the suspension. Make sure nothing is visibly bent. An alignment IS a repair and the alignment can be thrown off by damage.

-check your swaybars. A problem with a swaybar can cause the exact symptoms you describe. Check for obvious bends and check the bushings.

-check tire wear. Tramlining can be a problem with these cars and when your tires start to wear (esp. if you have never done a tire rotation) they can start to tramline

-If you know anything about geometry and you have a yard stick and a bubble level, you can do a crude alignment check yourself. If a tire is WAY off you'll see and you can take the wheel off and really look under the car and see what got bent.

Might be raising a dead thread, but I thought I would add what I am finding in recent years. Including my own car, a 2013, several cars in my client lists exhibited the same things in recent years.

The upper arm of the rear suspension was showing significant wear on the bushings and joints which will allow the wheels to wiggle under loads. It may not be apparent in inspections on a lift or jack stands as the upper link is canted enough to not allow it to wiggle much at all when the wheels are drooping. But removal shows clearly loose joint at the hub.
This is on a 70,000 mile old car typically and is something common to cars that have decent grip tires, and in the roads of the USA where pavement is rough. It's also typical in most cars, but FRS/BRZ is especially sensitive to such wear as the car is so responsive to driver feel.

Also can be said for front lower arms and its king pin joint, steering outer arm ball joint, as well as steering rack mount bushings too.
Though the effects might be less apparent in freeways, a replacement of these parts, will refresh the car to that nice taught laser sharp feel again.

What's happening is that even with pin-sharp alignment done at static state on a rack, as soon as it sees deceleration or acceleration on the highway at speeds, the wheels either toe out or in, and steers the car left and right under different throttle loads. This because even with the steering and toe arms holding the wheels tight, the upper joint at the rear is still allowing tires to change alignment at the root mount. Same can happen with front lower joint but it seems to be much more annoying and apparent when rear wheels steer out of alignment as it does so without any steering feedback.

Hope this helps.

whataboutbob 11-20-2020 11:57 PM

I've experienced this issue, and it was due to having excessive toe (either in or out) on the rear of the car. If you have adjustable toe arms, I'd check to make sure that their mount points are fully tight, that the bushings for the toe arms are in good condition, and verify that you don't have excessive toe. What is excessive is kinda subjective, but I'd think that anything more than 1/8 in in either direction from zero might be too much. The more adjust-ability you might have from aftermarket rear suspension parts makes identifying where the issue might be originating from more difficult. If all else fails, I'd suggest starting with factory lengths on any adjustable parts first to see if you still have issues.

Oh crap another part that suddenly want to replace...

Moto-P 05-30-2021 11:48 AM

Another addition since enough time passed since the last update.
I've come across a similar situation 20,000 miles after the last post and doing all that.
This time, the culprit was the rear subframe bushings. They were getting loose enough to rock the car upon up and down motions cresting over bumps on highway road surface.
Replace these crossmember bushings or add rigid collars available to reinforce the four bushings. Problem solved, once again. These cars are sensitive to alignment changes. Yes.
