Cracked Tail light

Hey guys,

Got about an inch and a half of cracking on my stock tail lights. What would be the best way to fix it? Just searching around, I suppose a common fix is to use an epoxy?

Thanks.

8R6 05-04-2016 06:26 PM

wheres the crack at? i personally would rather just buy another set of taillights from someone selling their stock ones. dealing with condensation issues would bug the hell out of me

MechOps 05-04-2016 07:40 PM

Here's the crack. The crack starts at the bottom.

I want to try to save the light, but if not, I'll get another one.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it until it gets worse, then it gives you an excuse to upgrade.

I wish my tails had a crack like yours so all the water would drain out.

Lol. Try drilling a tiny hole at the bottom ;)

MrMarinakos 05-04-2016 10:46 PM

Sell you my stock tails for 105$ shipped.. lol

MechOps 05-04-2016 10:48 PM

Lol. That's actually not a bad idea.

PandaSPUR 05-05-2016 12:13 AM

I've had a cracked tail light (also at the bottom, but waaay worse) for over a year now, probably like 3-4k miles. Light still works fine. I'm leaving it alone till I buy Toms lol.

I'd assume condensation/water problems are worse?

RichardsFRS 05-05-2016 07:02 AM

I'd run a bead of clear caulk right thru it and leave it, till it becomes a bigger problem. Don't want water in there

MechOps 05-05-2016 07:49 AM

Indeed. I don't want to leave it the way it is and have bigger problems down the road. I can caulk it or put some kind of a clear epoxy to mitigate any creeping.

Not really. The hole crack is at the bottom, so its not like water can flow in and fill the housing. Plus, any condensation just leaves through the hole lol.

Tcoat 05-05-2016 10:22 AM

I would just leave it alone. Like has been said there isn't much that is going to get in there and if it does it can get right back out again. Any patch job is going to look worse than the crack.

Leonardo 05-05-2016 11:19 AM

clear coat it! It should seal the Crack and add shine. Make sure it's clean, you may have to buff it out after you spray. Good luck!

Edit: clear both lights so they match... buy real clear. It's $8

Or. Have the lights wrapped clear red. It will hide the crack.

+1 no one has noticed mine from just walking by. I can take a pic later.

Interesting! I have never thought of a clear coat. I was thinking of some kind of a film or clear wrap...but yea, I'll look into clear coating.

Has anyone done this kind of repair with a clear coat? I'm interested to see the results.

I don't think the film or wrap would work to be honest. I've read around on here and remember someone asking about tinting their stock tails with film. It's because the curves of the tail light won't let it hold.

:EDIT: Here's the thread that lightly addressed it Thoughts on tail light tint.

Wrap is totally possible, just not easy. It will take some patience, at least three hands if not four, a heat gun or hair dryer, vinyl squeegee, soapy water squirt bottle, and lastly... Experience. I have tried to do it myself, and have not been able to get the whole light. It was my first try. I have more tint. I will post some pics next week. My friend is going to help me this weekend. He works at a vinyl shop.

go buy super glue from a beauty supply a squeeze a few drop into the crack (assuming it didn't split open) these glue are quick hardening and they're clear when dry. cost a few cent. last forever and will seal up little cracks.

PS the glue bottle is about an inch tall and a few cm wide. easy to identify.

MechOps 05-05-2016 03:03 PM

Yea, it hasn't split opened, but may have a potential to creep.

There are precut wraps available for the tails.
Or of course you can just plastidip them like this wingnut did!

MechOps 05-05-2016 04:14 PM

Plastidip solves everything. XD

I've got an extra driver's side with no crack in it for ya. PM'ed.

adamskilla 07-01-2016 01:41 AM

I believe there is a bulletin for this issue. Take it to the dealer and they should replace it.

Mine started as a small crack on the top. Eventually water built up and condensation added to the build up over time.

I recall having to make a small fuss but eventually they shut up and did it.

I actually just installed my new Depo Tribar Smoked black tails and noticed a difference between the original driver side tail and the replaced passenger side one. It has to do with the foam seal gasket thing. Funny how it only was an issue with the one side though.

I took a video of the difference. If anyone is interested I can upload to YouTube and post.
