Can you fit a set of wheels and tires inside a FT86?

If you were buying a set or bringing them to the track, can you fit a set of 4 inside the car? One in the trunk, two with the seat folder down, one in the front seat???

Thanks

Tcoat 05-01-2016 09:45 PM

Yes it was purposely designed for that.

jawn 05-01-2016 09:46 PM

If you fold the rear seats down, you can fit all 4 without using the trunk.

Thanks, I thought I remembered reading about that when the car first came out, but wasn't sure. I have only had it for about 5 months.

LOL. Next time I will google it. I transported 4-17" mustang rims to sell them to someone, it just didn't look like there was that much more room if they had tires. Now that I see you have to stack them it makes sense, but as to other threads I found on this forum, not sure how safe that is in the end.

Still yes, from @Tcoat's post.

Also their handbags, it seems.

Elkton86er 05-02-2016 01:00 PM

If you fold the rear seat down you can stack the wheels with mounted tires 2 behind drivers seat and 2 behind passenger seat with no impact on trunk space. This assumes the stock wheels and tires. They just (barely) fit - per design.

I do this twice a year when I have my local tire shop swap winter/summer wheels.

I've fit 6 215/45/17 drift spares in the car with the spare tire and tools taken out. 8 if you take out the rear seat. ;)

I must not be good at tetris.. cause 4x 18x9.5 mounted with 255/35s did not fit without me doing some trickery..

That's because you are trying to transport 9.5" wheels with 255 tires.

245 and/or 9" is about the max you can do. 9.5" can only fit 1 in trunk and sorta 3 in back seat if you fold the seats down and play Tetris.

I basically fit them with 2 staggered in the trunk and 2 semi standing up in the back seat, with my driver seat dangerously close to the steering wheel.. But it was only for like 45 minutes till I was where I needed to put them on lol

ZionsWrath 05-03-2016 07:12 AM

Yes, here is my old configuration. I got a better one I can take a pic next track day.

My tires barely fit though. 17x8 with 225/45.

If someone knows someone who can build me a tire trailer I'd be open to it though.

This is what I'm wondering. I'm 6' and drive with the seat slid all the way back. Last year when I picked up my 18x9.5 rims in their original boxes, they barely fit with no tires on them. I don't see how even the stock rims with tires would fit in there without pushing the seat forward. For those who take tires to the track in their cars, are you having to push your seat forward to fit them?

Yes. I sit fairly close to the wheel. I'm 5'10. If my seat isn't properly adjust it doesn't fit well.

If you won't be having a passenger you can fudge it and put your seat more back but the wheel you stack on the passenger side will intrude on the passenger seat so you can't really have anyone sit in it.

For me I have to adjust it just right to fit me and my passenger "comfortably". There is more room to mess about with stock wheels/tires size.

Whenever I transport any track wheels/tires, I never move my driver's seat.

Spare comes out. Then two wheels stacked on top of each other in the trunk (245/40-17 + 17x9" + tire totes usually provide a perfect fit) + two wheels in the back seat folded down.

If I need space I'd put the wheels upright and there's ample room for a drink cooler, my toolbox, jack, and even luggage.

I packed all this in my car last week and drove almost 4000 miles to/from COTA.

Any pictures how it looked after you fit everything in? I actually never thought of taking out the spare to fit another tire/wheel underneath..

yeah, I never move my driver side seat.

Huh never thought bout taking out the spare... even with spare and other kit in the trunk, I still fit (back seat down of course):
17x9 245/40 tires x4
2 ton jack
helmet x2
camera bag
cooler
tool box (mid size)
impact wrench
torque wrench
water spray
backpack
magnet numbers
& still have space for my gf in passenger side to sit.
*disclaimer*
My gf is 5'1" (actually 5', but she claims 5'1" lol)

Prob I can fit 18x9.5 w 255~265 width tires without an issue... but not 100% sure, cuz I've never done it.

I take the spare out only if I'm transporting wheels AND a jack.

No need to haul two sets of jacks and spares when you already have it in the car for track use.

I'll put together a video or snap some photos to illustrate what I do to pack everything.

Actually I got the idea from running wide wheels and big brake kit(s).... and a rear wheel drive car with a non-open differential.

1) spares can't be used in the rear
2) spares can't fit over any big brake kit
3) spares will be dead weight and useless

I ended up having a weird habit of either not running any spares, or leaving in a track wheel in the car.

Good point. If you upgrade the brakes, spare will become waste. This is one of the reason I'm still hesitant to upgrade the calipers.

I carried a can of puncture seal in my Talon instead of a spare. It will work fine for about 90% of the flats you may get as long as the bead is not broken or the tire actually torn. It isn't a permanent fix of course but it always would hold until I could get to a shop.
