Turbo rattle?

Hey how's it going everybody? I'm fairly new here hoping to get some feedback.
I took my wife out to the beach yesterday which was an hour way drive. On our way back I started to hear a light rattling noise coming from the turbo area, it progressed and it kind of sounds obnoxious. Happens on low rpm accelerations and fades off around 4000's as well as and when you're cruising and lightly step on the gas you hear it rattle. You can hear it on normal idle now as well. Still has boost pressure, no smell or smoke detected. Anybody have an opinion ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :thanks::iono:

Did you check for play in the bearing

Stuck wastegate?

Is the intake side all clear? Does the turbine spin freely without any friction?

Tcoat 04-25-2016 10:21 AM

Are you sure it is even the turbo? Could it be a loose heat shield or exhaust? I ask because many of the low RPM rattles brought up here end up being loose shields.

the turbo accelerates the growth of the crickets every time you hit boost

so... what exactly is your setup?

None of us know what you have, and without knowing what kit you have it's impossible to say what problem you are experiencing and the solution for it...

pictures with arrows showing us where the sound appears to be coming from would be good too. but if its a rattle i agree with tcoat, probably something like a heat shield or something resting on another part.

might just be an exhaust/shield rattle, i know my headers rattle a bit against the shield. (Ft86 - catted UEL)

What's up guys, took the car to Ptuning in VA. They found the recirculating dump tube (2)
To have cracks. And was just throwing gas into the sensor.
Was about 365 for parts and 277 in labor. Runs better than before for sure . Such a significant improvement. Now time to save up for a flex fuel kit

fumanchu1 05-09-2016 05:30 PM

how did your dump tube crack? was it not shielded ? placement? etc.

I ask because if it's due to something like placement of the tube then it may very well crack again in a short time

If there is no flex pipe section in the downpipe, that can be a contributing factor.
