Detailing the engine it self?

Is there any way to remove the oxidation all over the engine and its accessorys? Or atleast make it look presentable, I tried a quick search and nothing came up that directly answered my question.

Generally speaking - don't blast the battery or alternator with water, and go ham with some degreaser/all-purpose cleaner.

I clean up my engine bay for the first time since after one year that i bought it. First i cover the battery and alternator with bags, then used Chemical guy's all purpose cleaner and soaked the engine bay with it. Then leave for a few minutes and use light pressure water and rinse it. Let is dry and then engine bay is dry, apply Chemical guy's silk shine dressing.

for the record Again i was referring to the engine not the engine bay... my car is boosted and my block is very exposed and I was tired of looking at corrosion.

I have the same question. I've seen some people say aluminum wheel cleaner works well...But I don't know how I feel about that. I have taken Mothers Metal Polish to my timing cover, alternator and other various bits and that definitely gets corrosion off nicely, but can't polish everywhere without having to start taking all sorts of parts off from the car which I'd like to avoid.

Use simple Green Aircraft Cleaner. It's safe for aluminum, rubber, plastics etc. Works great!

Great job, by the way isn't it a dust magnet?

Clean Engine...

Helps when the core support and radiator are removed to get that block clean.

I don't know if I am being naive but aren't there all kinds of electronic goodies in most modern cars that would be damaged by water? I know some of you mentioned covering the alternator and battery but what about the rest of the exposed electronics. I know off the top of my head that the MAF sensors are exposed. Also the design of our air filter is designed so that the edges of the filter actually stick out of the air box... wouldn't that get wet and start smelling like crap? I'm sure i'm missing a bunch of other stuff but is it really worth cleaning the engine bay that no one besides you or your mechanic is going to look at?

NahumCC 04-29-2016 09:19 PM

I've hosed down engine bays plenty of times without taking extra precaution to cover up accessories or critical sensors.

I think people worry about this more than they need to. The engine bay sees plenty of water. Just make sure you give it plenty of time to air dry before restarting after a heavy wash down.

Not currently lol but its a relative point that I was making. The engine bay isn't 100% sealed from the elements so when it's wet out its going to get wet in there.

A hose down from above isn't going to destroy anything as long as none of the intake tract is left open and you let the alternator air dry out.

Anything that is super critical has waterproof connectors to ensure corrosion doesn't build up on the pins.

Anyone can do what they want and are comfortable with when it comes to hosing down the engine bay.
