How long are you planning on keeping your BRZ?

And how often do you keep your cars in general and for what rationale?

The BRZ is my third car in 4 years, having gotten out of the prior two not by choice (first was totaled, not at fault, second had mechanical issues).

There is already a thread on this, I am too lazy to dig it up maybe someone else will do it.

Nah, let's just stay here with this one.

I suspect I'll keep mine for a long time, barring any unforeseen circumstances. I bought my prior vehicle (Jeep Cherokee) brand new in June 2000 and still have it. I tend to look for a long time until I find something that fits my personality, then buy for the long haul and hang onto it. The Jeep's engine finally gave up the ghost in 2014, so it now has a stroker and is getting outfitted for offroad use. When the motor finally wears out in the BRZ, it'll probably get a rebuild for track/street.

GeorgeJFrick 03-18-2016 02:42 PM

I'm planning 6-10 years, depending on how this all turns out.

If for example they retire the cars soon, I may stop driving it sooner and restore it to stock with a plan to keep it for a long time.

Otherwise, at the 6 year mark I may want something more 'track ready' instead of autox focused. Probably an Sti or something.

LOL not a bad plan I still dont feel like finding that thread

Okay my turn. I am planning on keeping my FRS forever. One day it will be a strict track car. Its only my second car. First car was a 1986 300zx and I sold that to my dad cuz it was costing to much to maintain for me when I was 17-18. Then I ended up with the FRS at 19, funny how that goes.

Flo 03-18-2016 03:10 PM

My 5 year old has already called dibs on it when he is old enough to drive.

I already have an SUV, motorcycle and a scooter. I think my next car might be a proper 4x4 and keep the BRZ.

Scenic Driver 03-18-2016 03:19 PM

I've put 90k miles on mine in 3 years, eventually it will make the decision for me.

STV3 03-18-2016 03:24 PM

I plan on keeping mine until I get rid of it.

Hey another XJ owner! I've got a 97 Cherokee, with like 167,xxx on the clock, slapped on a 4.5' suspension lift and some meaty 33' tires. It's a blast in the snow and I plan to keep it forever.

As for my BRZ, I'll probably keep it until my loan is up, then possibly put it back to stock, sell the mods and the car, and then buy a new WRX/STi.

MalcolmHimself 03-18-2016 04:15 PM

Well I mean, I found it.

I plan to have it for a while. Plenty of things to do, plenty of time to do them.

mav1178 03-18-2016 04:18 PM

After I drive my car at Circuit of the Americas at the end of April, I may or may not keep it.

Depends on how I feel after I wake up on May 1, 2016.

Lynxis 03-18-2016 04:24 PM

I plan to drive mine into the ground assuming I don't wreck it first. I'm 33 now and I'll be surprised if I don't still have it when I turn 50.

I'm not saying you'll still recognize it by then but it will still be the same car.

rookie 03-18-2016 04:38 PM

I'm keeping an eye out for the new s2k. I haven't heard anything solid, mostly rumors and speculations. If it turns out to be a real thing, I'd seriously consider trading my SWP BRZ in for a Championship White s2k.

Mine's a 2000 with similar mileage, bone stock up until I had the pleasure of experiencing the 0331 head crack. Now it has a Golen 4.6L stroker with Brown Dog motor mounts and engine brackets, a Spectre cowl intake, Gale Banks header coated by Swain, Magnaflow cat and a Gibson cat-back. I also did an H4 e-code headlight conversion with an ARB 3-relay harness. However, out in the garage waiting to go on it I have a front JCR bumper with the stinger, a rear JCR bumper with the swing out tire carrier, a Warn 9.5ti winch, a set of 5-90's battery mains, a Premier Power Welder with 190 amp alternator for onboard welding capability, an ARB compressor, a high pinion D30 out of a 4 cylinder XJ (for the 4.10 gears and to replace my LP D30), a Ford 8.8 LSD with 4.10s, a set of aluminum rims with Kumho offroad tires (31" for now, because they came with the rims, going up to 33" when I wear them out), and an AGR steering pump and steering box (would have gone with PSC, but these were a NOS deal still in the boxes that I couldn't pass up). Still to be ordered: Frame stiffeners, lift, steering and a Tom Woods SYE and drive shaft. I'm going with a 4.5" long arm lift, but I haven't decided between Rubicon Express and Clayton and haven't even started on figuring out the steering.

To keep this on topic: I think the XJ is a perfect companion to the BRZ. Having it will actually let me keep the BRZ running longer, since I can use the XJ for situations where I'd rather leave the BRZ in the garage.

daoznn 03-18-2016 05:32 PM

Most likely until it dies... at least once. I drove a 94' Camry with over 250K miles up until last year, so I doubt I'll be letting the BRZ go anytime soon. (As a side note though, the Camry is still running strong.)

RobertPaulson 03-18-2016 05:41 PM

i'm keeping mine at least until the end of summer. then we'll see if i want to stock out and sell her.

i've also been tempted to get into motorcycles.

wreckedrex 03-18-2016 05:46 PM

Until it becomes a pain in my ass. Of the 12 or so cars I've owned in the last 15 or so years it's my favorite by far, but I don't really have the patience to deal with frequent problems anymore.

You are going to want boost / way more power after you drive there probably :)

The enjoyment I get out of this car is not by acceleration. If I wanted more power I would've gotten a different car to begin with.

I was thinking about this recently. I am enjoying my BRZ a ton. However, my eyes are wandering to a Lotus more and more. I decided that I have created a nearly perfect sporty daily driver with my BRZ (Turbo/Flex/etc 365WHP) and I will not get rid of it. I always keep a Jeep Wrangler. I will now keep this BRZ for the foreseeable future. And - I will put a Lotus beside the two. I think that is a really nice trio of vehicles and fills most of the desires I have. Maybe a Caterham SP300R as a track only ride if I move next to a track. And - you know a Bentley flying spur. The cool thing about the BRZ is it can fill that niche for the Lotus and let me consider the Spur. What can I say - I like cars and get attached to them. Just need a bigger garage which is in my plans for the next house and is actually an outbuilding on its own - instead of horses - autos :)

I could not be happier with how my BRZ has turned out and it still has lots of potential. It is just really happy with E85 at the HP it is putting out right now. Any more and I have to deal with the tranny. Also - even running 17x9 Hankook Ventus RS3s - I have to watch that back end when the boost hits hard. The car is light back there and going to 400+ HP I feel would be too much without a widebody kit and some larger tires. Then - I feel like most of the initial characteristics that make the car fun would be gone. I think 350-380HP is an awesomely fun configuration for a DD.

Anyway - just thinking out-loud. It was a good question :)

I agree, just going off what i've heard from a lot of people say after driving there thats all :)

x1UP 03-19-2016 03:45 PM

Plan on keeping this car for as long as I can, as long as I live. It's one of the few cars that give me joy everytime I ride in it.

I'd have to get something better for a fun car. Right now, I can't think of a more fun car.

Until I can't get in or out of it anymore. I'm 61 going on 16.

That's funny, but at 57 it's something on my mind! For now though, it's only an occasional groan getting in and out of it, which I seem to do regardless of what I am doing!:D

I usually keep my cars 4-6 years, but I look at the BRZ a little differently. I don't drive it every day, and it stays in the garage a lot in the winter. Right now I don't think about selling it. I look and read about other cars, but to be honest, there isn't much of anything I would rather have. Sure, a McLaren 570GT would be nice, but that isn't really in the cards right now.:)

I feel the same way. It doesn't need more power, unless you race it or wantonly break the law. The interior is purposeful, not cheap, besides, I'm driving it, not lounging in its luxury.:w00t:

covance 03-21-2016 01:08 PM

I am leaning towards forever at this point as well.

I have always been obsessed with great cars and the desire to own a ton of them but lately I have had the following thoughts floating around in my mind:

-Owning more cars means more things to maintain, more things to worry about (vandalism, parking them safely) more thing to insure, etc

-BRZ opened my eyes to how much fun a great driver's car can be without a ton of power/speed, and how you don't really need that if you aren't going to the track

-BRZ is a ton of fun while being reliable and relatively less expensive to maintain/insure compared to what I would consider getting down the road

-Instead of saving then spending the money on faster and faster rides and their associated expenses (I would think down the line I would want a Porsche or M3 next) I could get more bang for my buck in terms of fun from getting into motorcycles

Random thoughts at the age of 26

Jeff D 03-21-2016 02:03 PM

Forever.

Tcoat 03-21-2016 02:10 PM

From now?
2 years, 6 months, 12 days and hours remain up in the air.

Mazikowski 03-21-2016 06:09 PM

I plan on keeping my BRZ for a very long time. Probably in the 7-10 year range or longer... any bad juju notwithstanding.

Side 03-21-2016 07:35 PM

I plan on keeping my BRZ as long as possible. I have the automatic and it's both my daily driver and my autocross car.

sprintertrueno86 03-21-2016 08:02 PM

Forever...unless the value goes up when it becomes a classic selling for 30k+ in 10-15yrs.

track junkie 03-21-2016 09:21 PM

I would sell it in a heartbeat, if I could find something I would enjoy more.
Since a driver's car like the BRZ is so rare, it looks like I will be keeping my BRZ for a long, long, time.
