Rubber dash coming up

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/04/bane5e2a.jpg Mine moved up a little, I'm trying to decide if I want to replace it at the dealers or just live with it for now... Is it that noticeable? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
That's not bad...yet. I would leave it. When I had my dash replaced, it was about ten times worse than that.

@becauseracecar1 I'd leave it. That's not bad at all.

I noticed this phenomenon on a used 2013 i was looking at, i ended up getting a 2015 and that's the thing i have been keeping an eye on each time i look the car over for any possible delaminations/defects. Based on some of the posts i've seen here, i am going to be getting a sun shade just in case.
|
Took apart the assembly today, will do a detailed writeup tonight. Finally go not to a point where I'm decently happy as a DIY.

I had a similar issue on my previous car where the dash was literally melting from the Florida sun... was hoping to not have any issues like that with this car... I want to keep it from happening, but I hate freaking sun shades :(

hey guys, I made a quick DIY of how to get to the problem areas. This may or may not work for you depending on the type of damage you have but at least it will help you diagnose the problem further by having a fully exposed work area.

I had some tint film laying around in my basement, and I had the idea of putting on a windshield strip on my BRZ. I've done all that in the garage, and later that day, I took the car out, parked it randomly, and the tint is now creating a shade right where the dash is going crazy. What if this is actually a great solution for this? And it looks awesome as well.

@Moskoi had the same idea although depending on time of day, it won't cover it. Bust as far as hottest hours of the day, it'll definitely get a lot of coverage. Going to get this done later ad well. Looks great!

When the stars align, wonders can happen.
(Looks OK btw) I have a dash-mat, mainly to reduce reflection in the screen. I backed with aluminium kitchen foil to keep heat out of the dash. I did the same with our previous car and on removal 17 years later, the dash was as new. |

Thanks to this thread I noticed that mine is doing the same.
I have always used a shade and still have this. It may be the heat and not necessarily the direct sun. |

Mine is getting worse. Tinted windshield and sunshade here. Starting to look like this interior is sub par on long term quality.

add me to the list :(

I think the problem is this. Because the problem area is right about the vents, when you blast the AC, it makes the adhesive cold. When you turn off your car, the AC is off obviously, and the temperature change causes the adhesive to deteriorate in a sense. So, long story short, temperature fluctuation when the AC is on, and after you turn off the car and let it sit.
|
That part of the dash is like a we noodle once it's been sitting in the sun. I don't think AC hot/cold cycles has anything to do with it personally.
|
Saw this post this am, just looked, mines doing it too. 7k on the odo. Guess I'll be digging up the old window shade from the basement soon.

I noticed this problem when my car was in the showroom floor during delivery - it's a factory fault, reckon it's sh1thouse glue for the amount of flex/curve in that area :/ |
Well, I would guess that if we complain enough, they can fix the issue before it leaves the factory!
So those of you that have the issue right now, please take pictures and email them to corporate. Link below! http://www.scion.com/contact/ |
Well, in order for them to fix it, you have to bring it to the dealer. Looks like a lot of people are not willing to do that.

I'd also like to find a permafix for this that I can do myself. Maybe an attractive piece of fitted trim that fits over the offending bulges but has hardware through the AC vents to hold them in place? My friend was like "can't you just take it to the dealer and have them fix it?" and my response was essentially, "ehh, yes and no"... |

This what? No need to jump on a bandwagon.
According to the repair manual replacing the dash is a straight forward easy job. I am not going to post the doc online. If dealers that are messing it up, they are doing so on their own accord. There are several techs on this board who take pride in what they do. Hearsay does not help the community get their cars fixed. Discouraging people to take their cars to dealers to get their cars fixed doesn't help either. Everyone wants everyone to enjoy their cars. |
The guy that changed my dash said that there is not tech data regarding this issue. So he had to do shit like we would. I have to go back and have him re install some bolts that were misplaced though.

I'm not saying the dealer shouldn't fix it, but many of us simply don't want the opportunity for such things to happen at all because we have little faith in the competency of the techs, especially when performing an uncommon task. There are absolutely good techs out there, but I don't know them personally. I'd love to get their input on this issue, though. For some issues I'd rather employ a fix myself than take it to someone I don't know, and thus, can't trust, regardless whether it's their responsibility or not. This goes for any repair garage as well, not just dealers, but unfortunately for warranty issues, the dealer is the only option. |
so after taking the vent off, it seems that the middle is not rising up because of a notch that catches on the vent.
I would think that a simple solution would be to place that notch evenly across the entirety of this part of the dash so as to prevent either side from rising again. A possible solution could be gluing this part of the dash down to a thin piece of metal or plastic that attaches on the underside of the piece with a 90 degree angle that spreads across the affected area and has a notch at the end. idk if thats an understandable explanation, but thats just my two cents. i know that someone has already used epoxy and clamped these pieces down, but this was just another way one could fix this issue edit: not too sure if the first method is the best route to take because it may cause fitment issues with the vents, but Im not sure. Ill have to check it out again. Also im not sure if there is a place for these notches to catch across the entirety of the vent cover. I didnt look at it too hard when i took it off but ill go back and check unless anybody else can chime in. a much simpler way without having to fabricate anything might be to get a staple gun and staple across the assembly creating notches with the staples so that these notches would catch on the vent and keep the dash from rising up. |
