Mine does this is well. I guess I'll take it in on Friday for them to look at it

Update on this.

Brought it in, they took a quick look at it and ordered the replacement right away. Broke one of the vents in the process so it was 95% of the way done after having it in the shop for 1 day. They gave me the car back and told me they'd order the vent, it took a couple of days, but they got it in and fixed it.

Had some other issues with the dealer in question, but they're working to make those right. All in all it was a pretty decent experience, and it went better than I was expecting, no questions asked when I showed them the dash. They were a little apprehensive to replace it at first, but it ended up turning out ok.

I'd say if you're having the problem, just take it in they should be able to have the swap done in one day after they get the parts in.

Estey 06-08-2014 03:06 PM

im confused, is everybody having this replaced under warranty? I have this in my car as well, but Im not under warranty anymore and I cannot afford to buy a new dash

ZionsWrath 06-08-2014 03:39 PM

Yea I have pretty similar to the pic above. Meh, I doubt I'm going to do anything about it. noticed it for some time doesn't seem to ever get better or worse. Don't really want dealer messing with replacing dash.

1Cor10:23 06-08-2014 05:01 PM

Is the replacement permanent fix or is it just going to lift again?

AVodka14 06-08-2014 05:21 PM

I had my assessed a couple of days ago. It is hardly noticeable and the dealership did not find a TSB/recall for it. My service manager recommended I wait until my warranty is up in one more year and see if it gets worse. Meanwhile seeing if this is something that becomes more of frequent complaint. The pic above is definitely worse than mine. I wonder if replacing the dash will be a permanent repair.

Estey 06-08-2014 05:30 PM

I think it's a permanent repair in a sense that everything is restored to brand new condition, but it is likely to happen again if it continues to bake in the sun. So after replacing it, it would probably be best to protect it with a sunshade and whatnot

ericmpena 06-08-2014 06:07 PM

Seems like a longer term fix. My dash was coming up after 6 months or so. It's been getting a lot worse just these passed 3 weeks. Even if it's out of warranty I'd still bring it up to them.

Okay thanks, ill be going into the dealership tomorrow and see what they say.

Anyone consider pulling the center vent and just putting some glue with a syringe to keep it in place? The prospect of having the dealer replace the dash is terrifying in so many ways...

The thought crossed my mind, but then if I wasn't able to fix it then I would have screwed myself out of any chance of the dealership taking responsibility for it. Better off just leaving it to the warranty.

I will most definitely do this when the time comes. The dash has been coming up for a while now, but not enough to bother me to a degree to actually do anything about it.

I will not have the dealership tear the dash apart. When I had them fix the car, they couldn't even bother to put the wheel liners in correctly or use the correct size nylon fasteners.

Agree. I started to take the dash apart today and it looks easy to get to. Now to just find an appropriate glue.

sirsol66 06-09-2014 09:05 PM

Well, I took a swing at fixing this myself, we'll see how well it works.

The problem area is very easy to get to; pry off the two fake carbon fiber portions on your dash, unbolt the upper vent, and then pry it out (gently).

The issue is that the the dash isn't lifting because its multiple layers are separating; rather, it's just not tied down/clipped to anything other than in the direct center so when it gets hot, it expands and pulls up since it cant go out. I put a few thin pieces of double sided tape between that portion of the dash and the back of the vent; we'll see how well it holds.

See one post up. I left most of the pieces out so I can access this easier. The hardest part is getting the vent to separate after the tape has set. We'll see how it pans out tomorrow. If anyone's curious, so far it's just been 3m VHB tape.

If it doesn't work, I'll grab some pics after I take it apart again :bonk:

ericmpena 06-10-2014 01:20 AM

I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like under the dash, but I don't think glue or tape would've fixed mine. The padding under my dash looks physically damaged to the point where the front chunk has broken off from the rest of the padding, so it's no longer held securely to the rest of the dash.
Good luck fixing it on your own! Just so you know the dealership can get it done same day as long as you drop it off at around 8am.

Moskoi 06-10-2014 10:22 AM

I'm also having this problem, the car is 18 months old, and it's as hot as Texas here, that's for sure.

ericmpena 06-10-2014 05:21 PM

Just got my car back. Everything looks great. Only problem is for some reason my reverse camera isn't working. They probably forgot to plug in a wire. Gonna take it back to them now and see if they can fix it real quick.

EDIT: Just noticed something else. My head unit has vertical scratch about an inch long. Gonna bring that to their attention when I get there. :(

EDIT 2: Subaru reconnected my reverse camera. It's working normally again. They are going to speak to the senior advisor or something about the scratch on my head unit. They said that after the dash was installed the head unit was okay, but they're not blaming it on me. They think something happened while the vehicle was being cleaned/prepped after the work was finished. Anyways, it seems like they are taking full responsibility for it and will contact me tomorrow about what they can offer me.

EDIT 3: I found more issues on the dome cover above the cluster gauges. It looks like somebody stuck a screwdriver in the cracks to try to pry it off. I'm going to leave my car with subaru so they can take a look at it again and take the loaner car. I guess this is why everyone is hesitant to get work done at the dealership...

Haha, can't say we didn't warn you. It's always hit and miss though. They did great body work on my car; couldn't put the wheel liners in correctly.

sirsol66 06-10-2014 08:58 PM

Day 1 update: Tape is holding fine. Dash didn't move today despite the high heat/humidity.

AVodka14 06-10-2014 09:31 PM

If mine does not get worse. Which it hasn't and it is not even bad at all. I will not let them touch my car. Once my warranty is up and free oil changes are done. I am done with them. Dealerships suck no matter what. There are some exceptions. I see the guys that work in the back and they could give a shit less about your car.

EDIT 4: Dealership is going to order me a replacement Head Unit as well as the dome cover that goes above the gauges. Parts should arrive by Friday, but they said at latest the new parts will arrive on Monday and I'll have my car back Monday afternoon. I'm very happy they're taking full responsibility for the minor damages done to the interior. I just hope I get my car back with no other issues.

Mine is getting worse :( so hesitant to take in to dealer...

suaveflooder 07-01-2014 09:00 PM

Hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood), but if it does, I'm going to look for any other solution other than the dealer. I don't even use a sun shade. :confused0068: I just have Aerospace 303 on the dash.

Yeah, I'm hesitant for damage and also it might happen again since there isn't a tsb yet (as far as I know) so it may happen again. Maybe I'll head in if there's a tsb. Ideally, the aftermarket will make a nice one :)

Moskoi 07-02-2014 11:00 AM

I have an appointment with a local Subaru dealer to show my dash to a Subaru rep. I'm also hesitant for damage if they replace the entire dash, but I also want this to be fixed.

Just by looking at the employees in the shop of the dealer, they are working on brand new cars every day, feels like they don't really care about cars. I saw a brand new XV entering the shop at the speed of sound, full throttle, putting the car in park when it's still moving a lot and removing the white plastic wrap carelessly, quickly pulling hard on it, like if this was on the back of a fridge, that he'll never see again, and he wants this to be done as quickly as possible.

I don't want these guys to take my dash apart.

1Cor10:23 07-02-2014 11:28 AM

After some superglue failure, decided to try some epoxy, seems to hold so far, will report back. Nice thing about epoxy is that it fills the gaps nicely - I can tell that my white rubber layer has split on itself so vhb was out of the question for me.

ericmpena 07-02-2014 12:17 PM

I forgot to update this after I got all of my work completed from the dealership. The dealership replaced my dome gauge cover and replaced my NAV unit after they damaged those parts while replacing my dash. Now everything looks as good as new. The dash looks so much better and appears to be holding strong.
Even though I had some issues with them scratching my NAV screen, I'd still recommend getting this work done at a dealership.

1Cor10:23 07-02-2014 01:47 PM

@ericmpena if only all dealers are like that... It's so hit or miss

roddy 07-02-2014 09:02 PM

I first noticed this on my car about a year ago. Since then, I've been careful to park the car so that the back is facing the sun (south). It hasn't gotten any worse since the first time I noticed it.

Ddreder 07-03-2014 04:58 PM

I think mine is starting to do this as well.. I bought the car this way (pre owned) and I always though that the lip above the center vents sat a little high.. Is this covered under the factory 36K mile warranty?

I believe that's the case, as per previous posts. Make sure to make an informed decision when you take it in though and consider the risks of them screwing it up. From what's been discussed, it's an invasive procedure.

This. I know you used epoxy, but there is a trim adhesive that would have worked as well. My buddy and I used this on his 97 7 series BMW. Part of the dash was pulling up very similarly to ours, just on the side. Worked like a charm. We just clamped it over night and done. :party0030:

Mine is fine so far and I don't use a shade or any sort of cover. Just aerospace 303. If it happens, I will probably glue it myself. That is A LOT of work that I don't really want the dealer doing ()=)

Haha yeah, I held mine by hand for almost an hour and watched YouTube to pass the time. Then I realized I had mini clamps and ran to get them, so it was unclaimed for 30 minutes or so, unfortunately. Then clamped - still got them on, going to give it 48 hours just to be sure.

Nice! Crossing fingers that it works!

AVodka14 07-03-2014 08:59 PM

I have had a sunshade for over a month now. It seems to keep it the dash from rising during. Otherwise it's negligible albeit noticeable. The dealership made two little marks on my vent just inspecting it. Couldn't imagine what they would do if they actually replaced it.

P.S.

I took it in to get the 1st and ONLY oil change. Had the DS do it because I had water in my taillight. Then had them inspect the dash while they were at it. Last time they will see my car for routine maintenance. Hopefully all goes well for my baby. And everyone else!
