I think we have pretty much the same proportions. I'm 6'5 with a 36. As comfortable as it is, I desperately need it to be lower. An inch would make a huge difference.

My brother's your size. He hates the seats in his porsche. He's thinking about subbing in a pair of frs seats.

But it's not a miata so here we are.

So back I go to the search. I may end up buying one of these carbon fiber wheels and having a local upholstery shop cover the douchey bits in leather.

I might get this and sport the logo on purpose.

I am on the exactly same boat as OP. But one problem now worse, I need to keep 2017 steering buttons. I have no hope anybody will manufacture this.

Also boooo to all smartasses who gives feedback nobody asked for. Everyone is shaped differently, OP clearly wants closer wheel as many others, and people start responding to sit closer... /hate

Put a sleeved spacer on the steering shaft.

No link just an idea. When you swap wheels in this car there's a lot of stock trim that you have to transfer over to the new wheel. There might be an awkward gap if you have the wheel any closer to you.

I've heard rumor of a quick release device that retains the stock control wiring, clock spring adapter would be interesting. If it doesn't exist, maybe that's what I need to make.

I wouldn't care about any gap if it was reversible and sturdy. It would just be cool.

That would be ideal. My only concern would be - is the wiring for buttons, horn and airbag long enough? One would think these things are spot-on on dimensions considering the limited amount of space available and the delicacy (read reliability) of the airbag.

Just thinking doesn't your car have telescopic rack adjustment? You should be able to pull the wheel closer whilst keeping your pedal distance comfortable.

It has. Not of sufficient range.

That all goes through a flexible wire bundle commonly called the 'clockspring' which stays mounted below the quick release.

Actually, on thinking a bit, without addressing the significant potential for inadvertent airbag deployment, a quick release for the OEM steering wheel is just plain stupid. NVM. :(

I studied the clockspring thing and I think 2 scenarios can be done if we are talking reasonable extension like 1 inch:
1) everything just fit stock, just if you want to change the airbag you have to do that more carefully because you won't have that much play in cables
2) make a custom cables 1 inch longer.

Making the spacer cannot be that difficult!

Ultramaroon 05-21-2017 04:51 PM

yes, it is that difficult I believe, because the steering wheel is a potential bomb whenever it is disconnected.
