This was a joint venture between Toyota (exterior design with Subaru changing the front for their BRZ) and Subaru's chassis, drivetrain and boxer platform. Toyota utilized Subaru's FHI plant for production and both are essentially the same car with different spring rates.

It's pretty simple really.

Trans, diff, fuel injection, styling, and spirit are toyota.

The motor, engineering, chassis, suspension, interior and everything else is Subaru in addition to being built by Subaru.

Probably one of the few real joint effort cars out there. As a Subaru guy I tend to think of it as more a Subaru but the truth is without either manufacturer this car wouldn't exist as it does. The biggest reason it does exist as it does is because Toyota wanted a new car and didn't want to dedicate the resources that would be required for them to make it (engineering teams/R&D and most importantly, a new factory).

Just to be clear, since I noticed you said this in other threads too, the drivetrain is more Toyota than Subaru. The transmissions, differential, and even driveshafts, and axles/bearings are Toyota sourced. Not to mention the TRAC and VSC logic come from Toyota/Lexus RWD vehicles. But obviously the engine is more Subaru than Toyota. ;)

Because very few motors that actually roll out of the factory will have exactly 268 hp. There are procedures set in place for measuring the power of a mass produced engine to account for the variability in the manufacturing process. Sure the engineers have a great level of control but it isn't worth the extra money to engineer up to 270 hp and why would they limit it to 265hp just for the pretty number?

And 198 hp is for Europe, I believe they had to "detune" a bit to meet emissions or handle the fuel better.

Edit: I tried to do some research on the GTR because I know there was some controversy there but it looks like the engine was tested and rated for 480hp at the crank but many tests put the actual cars closer to 520hp with some being at (or slightly below) where it's rated, might have something to do with evolving tinkering with ECU and manufacturing processes during initial production.
