Always a fan of the "wet" oil coolers. Quicker oil warmup, use the radiator for cooling, and keeps it nice and stable 210F. Thanks!

No. The plug that's tapped for coolant Is for the atf cooler on the autos. You need to T it off instead

So for a engine newb like me, what I take from this is that the oil heats up faster in this configuration; yet stays at a cooler temp during hard driving? That math doesn't add up to me so can someone explain what this system is doing?

The other oil cooling kits I viewed seemed to make more sense in that you're running the oil through a radiator type device to air cool it during hard driving... So I guess I just don't understand how this "wet" system works.

Not knocking the system, just trying to improve my horrible mechanical knowledge!

Thanks for the great write up! I have been waiting for someone to successfully do this. Would anyone be able add newb friendly instructions for hooking this up to an AT car?

Engine coolant is maintained at approximately 195 degrees. The engine oil runs hotter than that, say 210 degrees when cruising and 250+ when driving hard.

The temperature differential with the coolant means it cools the oil at operating temps, and because the coolant heats up faster than the oil so the 195 degree coolant can also warm up the oil to operating temps faster.

But if you have any concerns about these oem oil coolers, you should know Subaru has used them for over 20 years especially on turbo motors. Other manufacturers use them as well on stock motors so these are not new. They are also on the STI BRZ concept car and other BRZ track cars we have seen.

Without studying plumbing diagrams it looks like this runs the cooler in parallel with the heater core
Do we actually need all those extra parts?

Is it possible to bend the pipe from the FXT pipe (14050AA970 - PIPE, WATER) to same angle as the original BRZ water pipe? Or even better if someone can make a new or modified BRZ water pipe cooler to use with the FXT oil cooler

Also how different is this from say a Perrin oil cooler?

I take it that since the FXT is a turbo this oil cooler is good enough to be used for all the other FI systems i.e. Vortech, KW, JR etc.?


This would be really cool if this works out...it's half the cost of the other oil coolers...so really like to know about the trade offs between the other oil cooler manufacturers.
