Cold Start, engine makes loud pop sound

Right now I have a 2013 FRS with TRD cat back, and sometimes when I do a cold start my car sounds like gas isn't going through fully and makes popping sounds from the exhaust.

But today when I did a cold start, my god it did that a couple times, then i heard a loud pop or cracking sound from the engine noise, so i quickly turned it off and openned the hood, nothing, so I started again and it ran perfectly normal.

Anyone experience this?

You might check (or have checked) to see if the car has any stored codes.

Have you changed gas stations / gas octane lately ... ??

When a modern engine "acts up", sometimes it will trigger (send) a code, indicating what may be the problem. These codes can be read by a code reader, hooked up to the OBD port on the car.

Code readers can be relatively inexpensive to purchase. Some auto parts stores will read any stored codes for free. A stored code is one that the car stored away and can be read at a later date.

My guess is that your car just "hiccupped" a couple of times and there is nothing to worry about.

I hope you get it sorted out.

Oh ICIC, kay i guess if it shows up again, ill bring it to a garage to have it checked for codes. But as of recently it has been running smoothly.
No problems now. I hope they are just hiccups, but the last one was a bad one haha!

it seems normal
car runs very rich at startup
can be "tuned" out

If you get pops during acceleration thats bad

Mine with the TRD catback also can make some weird and wonderful noises on cold start. It always levels out and goes away as soon as it drops out of high idle so I figure it is just the nature of the beast and have never worried about it.

If you have access to tuning device its pretty easy to tune out the high rev loud cold start, part of doing that is reducing the large fuel enrichment at startup to heat catylic converts which i suspect causes these pops

see tune tweaks link below

High Rev Cold Start noise reduction

Noisy high rev cold start is to warm up Cataylic converters for emissions purposes
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=17

Three things happen Idle is increased to 1700rpm
Additional Fuel is added by offsetting MAF scale during warm-up
Ignition Timing is retarded by 15 degrees during warm-up

The retarded timing is what makes most of the additional noise.
You may get CEL code P050B if so just disable it its due to ecu monitoring post start ignition timing.

To fix alter the “Ignition Timing Post Start” table under “Ignition Timing- Advance” folder .
Change all cells from -15 to -4 degrees and most of the noisy “bark” should be gone.

You can also reduce the “Idle control” “Idle control Target A” and “Idle control Target B” tables reduce the values for idle that are over 1400 rpm to 1400 rpm.

The MAF adjustments can also be scaled back but those tables not in OFT definitions yet

Don’t get to aggressive with your adjustments else your car may not idle well in very cold weather startup and you may also trigger a CEL code related to cat warmup.

Whole thread on it here.
