Radar detectors, worth it if I usually just go over 10mph above speed limit?

On city streets, I usually drive the speed limit plus 5-10mph over. Same on the freeway, if the speed limit is 65mph, I usually do 75-80mph. If a cop were to pull me over for speeding, would they have to have flagged me with a radar gun or will their word that "you looked like you were going pretty fast" good enough to hit me with a ticket?

I figure if a radar gun readout is required to give me a ticket, I'd go with a radar detector.

They could hand you a ticket for "looking like you were going fast" but it would never hold up in court. But then you would have to go to court in order to show that the officer has nothing on you.

But for the most part at 5-10 over, if you get pulled over for speeding, you were probably captured with a radar gun.

Chippies are pretty much using LIDAR for speed traps, which radar detectors will tell you when you been lit up by the cop. They don't use radars much anymore.

The other method is they pace you. As they pull up behind you, they note the speed and write that on the ticket.

contrary to popular belief, and as a repeat violator, LADAR is not used all that much.. But if it is used on your car, and your radar detector warns you...you have already been cought. instant on radar is more commonly used with the same effect. a radar detector is used to the best effect of noticing that lowend impulses from a radar and understanding what you're coming up to.. so the most part you always need to have a car a half miles in front of you..in order to understand what's going on..if there are no cars in front of you you're pretty much an open water and waiting for a shark attack. radar detector does not give you a free pass to speed but just go a little bit faster than everybody else.

LIDAR is widely used here in Sacramento.

It also depends on the state you're in. PA doesn't allow radar as the primary method for speed assessment. The LEO has to pace you first and they can confirm with radar afterwards. I'd you are concerned about Lidar, you can get laser jammers but you need to know how to set then up and use them properly.

I prefer to just use a rabbit and common sense when speeding.

I believe laser jammers are illegal in some states, so that's one thing to keep in mind

Here's a good page that shows where things are legal and illegal: http://www.rdforum.org/wiki/index.ph...aphical_Survey

Same I live in PA and they use radar essentially last except local police don't have radar only the state troopers do. Local PD use vascar or enradd. Radar detectors are essentially useless unless on an interstate here. I found pacing another car holding speed between groups and jumping between "crowds" works best.

I am waiting on a court date for a ticket. I passed an unmarked car that was driving on the highway. The ticket says radar but the notation at the bottom indicates pace/observation. Will see how it turns out.

If you really only go 10 over don't worry about it.

10 or over and you'll get pulled over

Unless it's a car meet or something and they really want to screw everyone over

In speaking with the cops I know, if a person gets pulled for speeding and they have a radar detector, they are getting a ticket and they mark the ticket, no reduction, so when you goto court you are getting the full ticket instead of a reduced one if you plea.

Some cops might give you a warning ticket if you were not being a complete jackass on the road. The easiest solution is to just follow the posted speed limit and/or keep up with the flow of traffic. If you get pulled for speeding and get a ticket, keep in mind the police are just doing their jobs and you were in the wrong.
