Ok complete noob.. how do these events work? Anyone able to cover what the day consists of at one of these?... I've never even spectated..

You can get a basic gist of "what autoslalom is" by searching through google, but I'll try to explain how our events work since every group does it a bit differently.

We run all cars numerically from lowest to highest. Some cars are left out for marshalling (ie. picking up cones, watching the course) as it's a requirement. Once that run group is completed, we switch marshalls with another group of drivers, then start over again. Basically, if there are 6 run groups, one of those gets replaced for marshalling, so in total you get 5 timed runs.

At the beginning of the day, you get a chance to walk to the course, so you know where to go, as the course always changes from event to event. The course length will vary anywhere from 40 to 60 seconds. The idea is to try to get the best lap that you can with the amount of runs that are available. It's not like time attack where you get practice runs and then a set of runs to get your one best lap. Here, it's about learning the course as quickly as possible and setting a quick time within those 5 runs.

If you're completely green to all of this, I suggest you do come out and participate. You will learn more instead of just coming out to watch. For the most part, most of the people that are there are more than willing to help you out too, so don't be afraid to ask to someone to coach you during your runs. The one thing that irritates me, especially after saying it at the driver's meeting, is watching some complete noob attempt the course solo on their first run, and then not ask for help or even refuse it.

I'm a novice but if I don't have a passenger, you can come with me if you want.

One thing that got me the first time I went was how confusing the course can be. I went all out the first run and got lost. Took some more runs to get familiar with it but by that time, it's too late. Now a days, I go really slow the first run. 2nd run, I experiment with gearing then try all out in 3rd run. I also record the runs and review them after each run

That's what has always bothered me with these events whenever I have seen them on youtube or when driving by.. it seems a forest of cones. But after talking to ppl at the DDT on the weekend, I get the impression that everyone starts out that way, and that we all get to be noobs at some point. I'll never know if I don't try it

I'm available to help navigate the course with you while you're doing your runs. Just come up and ask me, I'll be driving the #48 Blue BRZ.

While you're not driving, I would recommend that you get as many ride alongs as you can. It will help you navigate the course on your next run. Most people will not have a problem but some people are more on the competitive side so dont get offended if they prefer to run without a passenger.

I've been doing autocross for the last five years with a formula SAE car and absolutely love it. Now that I have a BRZ I want to continue but after seeing videos of this event, it makes me uncomfortable seeing how close the course is set up to poles and signs.

I think I will be doing the WOSCA autocross instead which is held at Centrilia airport on a wide open runway. Because of this the course is typically a lot faster and a lot safer I feel

How much does that event run? Sounds incredibly fun on an airfield
