Certifications, Licenses, and Such

My friend and I were comparing wallet contents one day because we both had cannonballs for wallets - a chiropractor's wet dream. We each had a lot of cards that were licenses for various certifications and things, driver's license, MSF, CPR, hazmat, PADI, concealed weapon, so on and so forth.

We had already been talking about getting our pilot's licenses for a few weeks prior to this, which lead us to the decision we want to get as many certifications as we can, preferably together, before we die. So by the time we're 60, we'll basically be licensed, certified, and compatible with everything. Just for the hell of it. We live in Mississippi, leave us alone.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas for things to get certified in that are relatively cheap and preferably don't need to be renewed?

I want to get certified for accelerated free fall at my local skydiving place soon. I'm not sure if you actually get nationally certified at that, or if it's a place-by-place thing. It takes like 6 jumps and a lot of classes to get there, so I would think you'd at least get something out of it to show other businesses if you ever wanted to jump elsewhere.

Also, feel free to share any stories or insight you might have from your experiences obtaining various certifications. Most of you are asleep right now, but I'm redlining on 300mg of caffeine and want to talk!

SCUBA I think is for life. I am DOT Compliance Manager and my certification is for life. Not that you would want it but.................
Some states offer lifetime hunting/fishing licenses. That's all this asshole can think off right now.

I've actually been considering maybe getting a welding job. It would definitely be a useful skill to have. Actually, my friend I mentioned in the OP is a welder, so I was considering going to work with him.

If you're serious about welding consider this: Given your obvious intelligence (writing/verbal skills are a good indicator, lacking an I.Q. test), and your enthusiasm for cars, perhaps you might consider becoming a skilled fabricator (with welding skills) for a motor racing team. My guess is that skilled fabricators are increasingly difficult to find, especially smart ones. I don't know what the pay might be, but the job security might be good. Hard to say, though, with America on the decline and funding for motorsports vanishing.

I'll bet you could find an employer who'd pay for your training.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the kind words. And yeah, the employer I have in mind would pay for all the training and pay me to get trained. I'd have to sign some sort of commitment though, and I'm not sure I'd be into all that. I've got other long term plans it could possibly conflict with.
