New England Forest Rally 2013 Volunteers needed
If you've ever seen rally racing on youtube, video games, or TV, and thought "how can I do that?", this is the thread for you. Volunteering at a rally is the best way to get started in the sport (
), and on top of that it's the best way to see a rally if you've never been to one before. Regular spectators are corralled into a few small viewing areas, and only get to see some of the stages. As a volunteer, you will actually be part of the rally, and you'll get an inside view of everything that goes on. When you are working, you will have a behind-the-scenes view of what goes into putting on a rally. When you are not working, you will be able to put your insider's knowledge to use and scope out the best places to watch the action. Here's what you can expect, based on my 3 years of volunteering as a spectator marshal: Thursday (optional) - arrive, register, help set up stages and planning Friday 7-9am - arrive and register. Receive your free shirt and some souvenirs, a safety vest and a wrist band. 9am - workers meeting. Go over the basics of how rally works and what is expected of volunteers ~10am - head out to first stage. Receive your job assignment and location. For a spectator marshal this means you will be positioned at a point where spectators are expected to stand. Your job is to make sure they stand in a safe spot and don't interfere with the rally. 10am-7pm - move from stage to stage, ahead of the rally cars, ensuring that the spectators are under control and in safe spots before the stage opens 9-10pm - return from final stage Saturday ~7am - leave for first stage 7am-8pm - mostly a repeat of Friday, travelling to different stages and making sure the spectators are under control. At the end of the day there are usually a few stages where you don't need to work and can find a good spot to watch from. 8pm-Sunday - awards ceremony at Sunday River, workers party, winding down Sunday - head home http://www.newenglandforestrally.com.../sign-up-form/ |
