Dealership service took a joyride (probably)

As you may well know, FR-S owners are given a 2-year free maintenance perk by Scion. Mine was at 6 months and 4K miles, so decided to take it to Dublin Toyota. Long story short, after getting my car back, I noticed my mileage was up by 4.4 miles.

For an oil change and tire rotation, I can't think of a good reason, why a technician would need to "test" drive the car for 4 miles.

Needless to say, I would be doing my own oil change from here-on, always done it with my other cars, just wanted to see what the Scion perk is, and decided it's not worth it.

every time I go to the dealership, I write down the mileage on a sticky, and stick it on the window (driver of the car will definitely see it).

never had a problem with joy rides.

Noting your mileage does no good unless you let the service manager know you noted your mileage and will be checking it out when you pick the car up. Much more effective.

funny thing, the first time i did it, i didn't tell the SA. Afterwards, he told me he notice that tag and said he knows I like to take care of my cars. He made sure it wasn't driven around and actually stashed it up front near the pickup point the whole time.

I've been going back ever since.

Every dealership I've been to notes the mileage down. But like the other poster mentioned that does no good unless you let them know you'll be checking it out when you pick the car up.

My dealer has a picture window between the waiting area and the service area. You can watch the service being done the entire time. Keeps them fairly honest. It should be a requirement at every dealership.

I've been doing business there a long time and know most of the techs - most are car-guys themselves and they really do try to be very careful of customer's cars.

4 extra miles? How far is it to the nearest auto parts store? They probably just ran out of oil and needed to get to Harry's to pick up 2 of the big bottles.

You trust Toyota enough to buy a car off them but you dont trust them enough to service your car? Do you drive like you are driving Miss Daisy all the time?
