Push button start general question

If you have a car with push button start, can somebody break into your car and just turn it on or does the key have to be within a certain distance? If so, what is that distance generally?

I've had some experience with Toyota's key less start. Key must be within the cabin of the car to start. Without it the ignition will just make a noise telling you there is no key.

I also tried starting my previous vehicle (IS350)with the remote in the car, stepped out of the vehicle with remote in my pocket and let my friend drive it off. The car just kept beeping. My friend drove about a mile away before turning around.

As for that Top Gear bit, I'm assuming the film crew had the spare key with them since Hammond bought the car when they were on their trip. Would be a lot of stolen Challengers if starting and moving the car was THAT easy.
