Where can you go?

So, where can you go across the southeast to run your car through its paces without having the cops show up? I didn't grow up in the area and for the longest time I only really paid attention to rally racing, so I'm not familiar with all the drag strips, motorsports parks, race tracks, etc.

I know in the immediate vicinity to me there's:

Road Atlanta
only open for SCCA events unless things have changed since the last time I looked at their website.

The Atlanta Motor Speedway
They have drag racing on Friday nights.
http://www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/events/drags/

Then there's the local Autocross
http://www.soloatlanta.com/blog/

Feel free to add to the list for those of us who want to get off the street for some legal fun but don't exactly know where to go.

That's a very good question...

http://www.na-motorsports.com/index.html

I tried to use this to find some road racing tracks. Sadly Kentucky doesn't have any but Tennessee does. Now if Dragonitti or OldSkoolToys would pipe in on some of the places in Tennessee...

I was just thinking about this. A buddy of mine in NC just attended a Z-max autocross event this weekend up there for around $45. Now I'm itching to see if there's anything around here. There used to be a drag strip a few miles away but it's been opened and closed multiple times over the years.

I think most people around here stick to back roads, industrial parks, and closed airfields... at least, that's where we always ended up.

I'm in Jacksonville, FL

Hey!! I live in J-ville too. I agree with the back roads and stuff. Too bad they closed our track and built apartments over it....

Nice! Another J-villian. I'm amazed at how many car/bike clubs and events we have and no tracks. Man if I had the cash to get some land right now...

Atlanta SCCA there are other Georgia regions too....SE SCCA Sub-Region Directory here.

The SE Region SCCA's horrible site has road racing info.

You can find road racing, autocross, rallycross, and more events to participate in on MotorsportReg.com and on DLBRacing.com.

Yeah, my uncle teaches at a few PCA event a year up in Georigia, but its a bit pricey and I have yet to make it up there... It would be nice to find something local though to save on expense. No hotel stays = more tires and entry fees.

FL:
Sebring: lots of clubs run it. Great track, my home track :P
Homestead: I hate it. It's ok, but I hate it. Long drive unless you live near miami.
PBIR: I haven't run it, ran the old moroso course, wasn't a huge fan, but haven't run the new track.
ERS (European rally school): Road course is supposed to be fun, but walls next to the track, I haven't run it.

GA:
Covered, except for Roebling Road Raceway, long ass straight, the rest is just a long ass rhythm section. Kinda hate it :P

SC:
Carolina Motorsports Park, love this track. Very fun track, a few dangerous spots, but fun overall. Middle of nowhere, but still, it's fun

NC:
NCCAR: never been there
Charlotte Motor Speedway: fun track, kind of an annoying infield section, but banking is fun and makes up for it

VA:
VIR: simply a fantastic track, I love VIR, except for the part about it being in Virginia :P

AL:
Barber, I haven't been there but it's supposed to be a fantastic track as well.

LA:
NOLA soon, it's not open yet, have a race planned for 12/3 there though so I'll report back.

For autocrossing, hell any larger city should have at least one autocross group. Around here there's 5 or 6.

Ah Roebling! My father-in-law was talking about some track by Savannah where he runs his M5, that must be it.

But, looking at the satellite map of the track, I see what you mean. There's not much variation in the corners, just a bunch of long sweepers.

Yep, that would be it.

Here's a video of it from the chumpcar, my crappy driving from the chump car double 7 hour enduro in Jan 2011. This was right after the car was t boned and we replaced all of the pass front suspension with junkyard parts. That's basically why you'll see more a little more centered on track than I normally would be, and why on the straights I am turning back and forth as the car randomly drifted around :P

What team do you drive with Dave? I do Chump and LeMons (mostly LeMons) with Schumacher Taxi and Team Cardorks (TD runs two Integras and an E30).
