Plasti-Dip

Okay no meme thread. Why does Plastidipping get so much brutal hate from everyone in the car community? I've been watching some videos from a channel called "DipYourCar" on youtube, a company that provides professional services to dip cars and all, I was thinking about getting this shade for my car in the near future. If applied correctly it seems like it looks quite amazing.

I dipped my car and it's held up great and the great thing is that if you ever decide to add more/new parts you can just paint match it easily. I always suggest ordering more than you need so you can have at least a gallon left over for such things.

Most people don't apply it correctly. They use rattle cans in their driveway.

seriously thinking about calling up a reputable body / paint shop in the area and getting my car a cool flashy color to pop for driving around places this summer. It blows my mind how awesome some of the colors look and how high quality some of the dips actually look to be.

One thing I noticed about it is you need to follow the instructions to the letter.

If you are spraying too close, too heavy or don't give it the 10-15 min to dry between coats, you will get runs. If it's too cold outside (I would guess less than 15-20C) it take a bit longer for the dip to dry so be patient. Finally if you just washed your car, make sure that everything is dry. If you spray and there is any water left on the car, the dip will form a bubble around it or cause runs.

It seems like if you do the prep work, follow the instructions and use the right tools, you will get a good result.

When I had my Speed3, there was a guy that had his car professionally dip (7 coats IIRC). It looked great for about a month until all the road debris and bugs had embedded in the bumper and hood; dip had to be peeled off and re-applied.

Not worth the money to me, would rather get it wrapped.

Strip any wax.
When you think you have stripped all the wax then strip it again.
Then strip it one more time just to make sure.

The biggest failures I have seen with dips is where people just tried to slap it on over the paint and didn't bother removing the wax.

If you have that much stuff getting stuck in it then you put too much on.

And Volt, what is this "no meme thread" instruction shit?

Everything goes better with memes

Not only that, there were multiple nicks and scratches on the dip, I don't see how 1 layer vs 7 layers could ever prevent that.

If it hits hard enough to nick properly applied plasti dip it would have chipped paint anyway. Stuff should not be getting stuck in it though.

Mazda paint is not as thin as Subaru paint, it holds up pretty well but the dip would get nicked from regular highway driving very easily.

OK so the Mazda had a bad dip job. That does not mean all dip is horrible. I have seen it last on cars for years with zero issues.
Oh and Subaru paint isn't "thin" the problem with it is that it is too hard so instead of flexing when hit it chips. New Mazdas are the same.

That's fine, it's good to have differing opinions, I, personally, am just speaking from my experience to give to the OP.

I had a set of wheels professional dipped 7 coats, and wile they held up to road wear really well. what i did notice is that the dip could be easy damaged with even your fingernail.

I just imagine areas like the door handles, of a dipped car getting ugly fast.
And horror situation some dumb ass walking past your car and runs his/her fingernail across it as says "whats this cool stuff all over this car? lets peel some off"

I would invest in a wrap
