Would you rebuild your gearbox or buy another?

So say your syncros are worn or a tooth on 2nd gets chipped, I'm sure its happened to many a gearbox. When it comes time, what do you do: buy a brand new one, get a donor, or rebuild?

No one clear cut answer fitting for everybody. Too many unknown / undefined variables that may differ a lot for ones answering and where they are located. For example if car is still under warranty, how much gearbox costs new, how much costs donor gearbox, how much just worn parts, how much local shops charge for rebuild and how much for drop in replacement.

Back in the day ....... I would have (and I have) rebuilt the transmission.

Went to the junkyard, pulled out 3 transmissions, took them all apart, laid out the pieces in order, put all the best pieces back in the best case, put the rest of them back together, returned them to the junk yard ...... told them none of them fit.

(sorry, times were tough .... we were poor......)

Now, if I had transmission problems, I'd use that as justification to get a new car ......

Here's a clue: I just rebuilt a trans on my other car.
Working used trans ~350
ONE (used but mostly new) gear for the rebuild ~350.

You do the math

Get the upgraded gearset (PAR?) then use that as an excuse to get a turbo!

If you've got a few worn synchros, maybe a fork and synchro sleeve that needs to be replaced, then a rebuild is a good option, especially if you'll be getting back a trans that is massaged to shift better than OEM.

If you have broken a tooth on a gear then it gets a little more expensive, but frankly, the gears in this version of the AZ6 are not horribly expensive. Retail on the synchro gears is between $80-120.

That being said, if 3rd or 4th is broken, then there's a high probability that the mating gear on the countershaft has sustained some damage. That shaft is almost the cost of a good used core, so that makes the decision a lot easier to make!
