How would center punching the spot welds help the problem?

Thank you for this post. This has been driving me nuts for months. I have secured so many wires and the trunk release and finally used some WD40 at the weld spots shown and it is gone.

I'm starting to get the exact same popping noise coming from somewhere in the front drivers side. I think its from some welding points by the hood area? anyone else notice this?

Just wanted to note, my BRZ's build date was 03/2013, so a few months after the TSB was issued, and this clicking/popping noise just started occuring. Car has 3,300 miles on it. Planning to get some WD40 soon.

WD-40 worked for me. I just sprayed every hole underneath the rear deck.
It's been about 1 month and it's still good. If it comes back ill probably just try again with a white lithium spray grease. Thanks for this! |

i drove my car from LA to SF and noticed one thing. When it was warm during the day, zero to minimal noises, then when i'm up in near SF when it got colder and around 6pm, man the noises were so bad. Confirmed the next trip when I went from SF back down to LA (noises near cold SF to nothing midway).

Did three things that seemed to have helped quite a bit. We'll see once it gets cooler. 1) Make sure the trunk emergency release pull is secured. I used a piece of double sided tape to keep it from tapping. 2) From the trunk, find all the spot welds you can and use a small flat head to wedge between the two pieces the weld is holding together (don't be rough, shouldn't yield metal). Then I sprayed some WD 40 on each weld and then did the same thing again to work the WD40 into the seam. Seems to have helped. If it doesn't, I'll redo with a proper grease. Basically this but did it from inside the trunk, not removing all that stuff to do this: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44636 3) This tweak: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42065 |

I have this same issue and it's driving me nuts almost as much as the dealership is. I have taken my car in three times to get this worked on. My mother, father, girlfriend, and about 4 buddies have all heard this noise as well.
So here is my tale of how this particular Subaru dealer will not be getting my business again... First time: Dudes in the shop tried to replicate the noise and couldn't. (Funny because I drove it out of the shop and it immediately made the noise. Second time: I had them ride in it and they heard the noise but proceeded to tell me it's not an issue with my BRZ because it's an issue for a 2012, not a 2013... But they "carried out" the recall on it (pretty sure they didn't) and as soon as I drove it off the noise happened like 4 times in 10 seconds. Third time: I took the car into the neighboring dodge dealership which owns the Subaru Dealer and had the Manager and Sales Rep ride in it, both heard the sound. They talked to the Subaru rep and they agreed to call the work line or whatever it's called to see if there are any parts they need to order. It's been two weeks since they "called the work line" and I have received no calls or anything. This is starting to piss me off and i wish i could just fix it myself.

Had the clunks and pings. All better now.
Used Dupont Multi-Use Teflon Lube. Applied to the accessible areas of the rear tray from the trunk. Didn't remove panels or pry things apart. The spray lube has a fast penetrating carrier that dries quickly and isn't sticky. No more crash and bang in the back. If it ever comes back, it's a quick fix with no damage.
