Its Gear Whine, especially noticeable in 6th.

I will try to lessen the problem with Liqui Moly 1040 (MOS2) and will report back tomorrow if it helped.

Had this since car was new, but don't notice it at higher speed (More road noise)

Same issue. Whine at ~76mph on up until ~82 then it goes away. It's annoying but I guess we just have to deal with it

So, the molybdenum sulfide helped.

Gear Noise is definetly quieter, but not gone.

Will go on a 1000km cruise on the weekend and will report back afterwards.

Trying to revive an old thread - does anyone have an update?

I took the vehicle to a couple of dealerships and of course, they said couldn't find any noises on the vehicle up to 70mph. They can't go higher than 70 mph since the technicians are not allowed to speed in a customer vehicle. They have a completely valid point but I still found it to be a very lame excuse. I have looked at multiple vehicle forums to at least get a clue to which part this noise may be related to but haven't gotten anything.

It definitely seems like a transmission whine as this happens only in the 6th gear. Can it be a bad bearing? Does a manual transmission have a fluid pump like the automatic transmissions - could this be the source of the noise?
@Falcon - what did you apply to reduce the noise?
@sobrz - Did you find anything that has helped you with the noise?

I dont know if this will help you but I hear gear whine in my car only on third gear. I believe it to be the synchros and here's why:

When I had the car brand new, no gear whine at all. I started racing (lapping at first, nothing competitive) 2 months after I bought it. A few years after, still racing the car, the whine has appeared. As time passed by, it got worse. And as of now, it has stopped getting worse, what changed? Simple, I wasnt heel-toeing while downshifting. I knew nothing about real racing (only virtual stuff) when I started lapping the car and I didnt even know what heel-toe was. At first my technique was pretty bad, but as of lately it has gotten much better. I think the synchros working overtime to speed up the gears while I downshifted has wore them down prematurely. Why third gear you may ask? Because in all but 3 corners out of the 4 different tracks I've been to, I have to downshift to third for all corners where downshift is needed, so third has seen more downshifts while racing than all of the other gears combined.

I wont take my car in for warranty work because it is heavily modified and Ecutek tuned on dyno. I will race it as is and weight my options when (yes when, not if) my transmition goes out to see if I put another stocker or get something better.

Either the noise got quieter, or I got used to it, or I hear it less because I now run catless uel header, but in either case it doesn't bother me anymore. I'm at 42K miles and counting.

I have a 2016 brz and I get the same thing and was looking to minimize or get rid of it. As it only occurs when I am on the throttle above 75 or so I don't see that it can be gear related. Intake or fuel pump is likely. Intake most so as it can happen at lower speeds but then it seems to be intermittent and may vary with wind velocity. Interestingly, my wife has a BMW 128i and it has a similar thing but much quieter and much less coarse sounding. Has anyone had any luck with a different intake or snorkel or some such thing?

Update Time!

My Dealership opened my Transmission and installed the so called

"6th Gear Service Kit" #30099AA840

and changed both gear wheels.

Result

The whine in 6th is completely gone!

The onyl part-difference we noticed was a better surface finish of the new gear-wheels in comparison to the old ones.

The only whistle noise left is from my 4,44 rear diff.

Well this s quite interesting. It begs a few questions and clarifications.

1.This fixes the whistle that occurs around 3.5k in sixth gear under throttle and goes away off throttle?

2. Was this work performed under warranty?

3. Had you any modifications on your transmission such as MTEC springs, white line bushing or fluid?

4. Thank you. I really enjoy road trips but listening to that whine for hours on end could dampen the experience a bit.
