I totally forgot to follow up on this thread. Well, I couldn't decide which one was better, so I bought both! Life is good! I have my svelte 2dr corner-carver that gets 30mpg and my big brutish highway stormer that gets 15mpg. I have achieved balance in the Force.

I realize that two cars are not the option for most people and I really didn't expect this would be possible, but I highly recommend a similar combination if you can swing the expense. Every time I've had two cars at once they've been so similar that it really didn't make sense, i.e. Mazda RX-7 and Toyota MR2, Datsun 240Z and MR2, E30 3 series and MR2, E30 and BRZ. These cars are both great for different reasons and have completely different driving dynamics.

I have a friend who has a regular A4. He loves the car, the handling, the joy of driving it and praises it to no end. Until the last year or so. His aged face shows the torture and suffering as he describes the two times in one year the engine has to be opened up to fix some gasket issue and cooling problem. Costs of which (a) he can barely afford (I understand was totaling $8k) and (b) is causing financial strain and resulting in his marital rifts. He finally wrote it off and I dared not ask about it either.

Cool story; I've hammered on mine every day for the past three months and it's been awesome.

Wouldn't balance in the force be a car between the two that is both a good corner carver and a highway bruiser?

Yes, when I have an extra $200k lyin' around I'll get a 458. Until then it's gonna have to be two sub-$30k cars. If I move out to AZ or TX I might sell both and get a used Aston or Ferrari because I won't need a winter car anymore, but I'd still need a regular car for a daily.

The older Audi cars have some terrible reliability ratings. That's no news. I would stay away from them, especially the RS models.

My wife owns a 2010 A4 Avant. We bought it brand new. It's an awesome car. No problem whatsoever. Plenty of power to make the street driving fun. Pretty good handling for its size. Huge cargo space.

If I wanted AWD performance, I'd get a WRX before an Audi. The Audi will blow up on you at some point.

German cars.. Fun to drive, not fun to own..

I sell Subarus. Let me tell you we've had more Imprezas/WRX's/STi's come in with blown motors than you can shake a stick at. When I sold Audis I noticed a lot had to have a pistons replaced due to oil consumption. Thankfully, my RS6 doesn't consume a drop. I had a stock '04 STi for 3 months prior to getting the Audi; it consumed a lot of oil.

Got my first check engine light last month; a quick plug-in of a scan tool allowed me to determine it was a faulty coolant temp sensor. $25 fix and was able to coincide it with my 75k maintenance which I did myself and was relatively simple. 5 months and 8k miles of enjoyment so far!

10 months, 11k miles since purchase and I'm still grinning like an idiot when I step on the gas with this car! However now it's time for front brakes. Bust out the wallet, because the 8 piston Brembo brakes require massive 365mm rotors that cost ~$400 apiece. Pads are an additional $1-300 depending on what brand and compound. Luckily I got a line on a used pair of JHM 2 piece rotors, so I can get the hats and order a new set of discs for cheaper. They also shave 12lbs of unsprung weight from the car as an added bonus. For a 4,060lb car these brakes offer impressive stopping power, I must say! These brakes are also found in the Audi RS4, R8, and Lamborghini Gallardo.
