Current dilemma... I might actually end up settling my flip-flopping about which old/classic car I want to buy far sooner than I expected. Now all my buddies (much bigger car fans and way more mechanically savvy than me) have numerous ideas about what I should do and how I should do it.

The biggest issue will be my desire to have a shop do a majority of the work because I'm looking for show/magazine quality restomodding, not something I built in a barn. I have nothing against homebuilt survivors, but my desire for this car has always been something I cannot build myself, specifically. How the do I tell my friends that while I appreciate the advice, and don't doubt their skills, I would still rather take some stuff to professionals?

You say what you just typed out to us.

Guys are stupid we need to be told stuff straight up. And if you want your classic steel to be rebuilt by a shop. Then by all. Means. Tell them it's not that you want wanna hang out and wrench and have fun but when it comes to something that me as an awful lot to you. You'd prefer it to be done by professionals.

I think the hardest one to convince is going to be former mechanic that has supposedly built numerous engines and cars. He's a new addition to the group, so I know very little about him. I do want to play the middleground wherever possible. Disassembly, final assembly, small fixes, sure. But major engine work/rebuild? Bodyshop stuff and paint? Definitely shop built.

Trust me, I've thought about it. There's two major issues, the first of which being that I'm extremely picky, especially for the amount of money I want to spend on something like this. Most restored examples are just too overdone, or have way too many options. I typically don't like the paint colors, or the wheels, or the engines. If I bought one restored I'd have to pay full price just redo half of it.

The other issue is the cars I like typically aren't directly in the collector spotlight, so very few restored versions exist to choose from. The car I very nearly bought this week (looks like someone beat me to it) is a 73 Datsun Sunny truck. Not likely to find one of those already finished.

I could, feasibly, pick an easier to find, cheaper car. Hell, just the other day I realized the Maverick was a thing, and I have a weakspot for fastbacks. Restored examples of those things aren't that much. It would be easy, but part of me feels like that's settling when I have many other ideas for other cars I want much more.

I'm a convert from the "built not bought" mentality. I used to be self righteous about it but now as I get older... If I had the money for a shop to do all this work I'd be glad about throwing it at them. I have so much "time" invested in the car I'm in debt to myself money wise. Haha

So I get right away what you are getting at. Even now as I'm letting paint dry on my headers about to crawl yet again under the car I wish I had the 800 or so for a shop to do this work.

I have done a couple of frame off restorations. If you can do ALL the work yourself you will save money buying junk and rebuilding it. If you have to pay a shop for any of the work you are better off buying a finished product and just tweaking what you don't like. There are reasons why you can buy half finished products for dirt cheap or get a fully finished car that will say "asking $20,000 have receipts for $80,000 in work". When considering a budget it can be far, far less expensive to alter a completed car than start from scratch and build the whole thing.

I have a 4Runner I haven't drove in over 5 years that I have over $16K in. Could probably buy a complete one for half that.

I have a bunch of buddies into lowriders. The "built not bought" thing comes up all the time. They talk about how none of the guys that say that do their own interior, paint, ect. and they talk down to the guys that bought mostly done cars. How can they claim built not bought if they didn't do most of the work you see themselves? My one buddy does paint, he said it is stupid, don't get into it.
