Just an hour? You sound efficient.

I spent ~3 hours when shopping for my FR-S at a dealership when the guy tried to get me in a 535i instead. I let him run his game, call all his managers, then walked out after 3 hours. It was hilarious.

I think that if you are talking to a salesman, just be straight up with him that you are just toying with the idea and not necessarily looking to buy. At least you are saying that if a more prospective buyer comes in, don't waste a better opportunity for a sale. Then the onus is on the salesman how much time he invests.

A good salesman isn't going to mind taking the time to talk with this guy and let him get to know the car. They can't know who is ready to pull the trigger and who isn't, so they're going to cast the net wide and accept that most of the people who walk onto the lot are not going to buy. But if OP does decide to buy, that salesman has already started a relationship, and it will be worth that hour if OP comes back later and wants to negotiate.
