Came across this recently. Thought it might be interesting to see an RX-8 and GT86 tested on the same dyno (Supersprint's MAHA brake dyno). The RX-8 revs much higher and makes an additional 12-13 peak hp, but surprising (at least to me) how much more torque the GT86 made in the low/mid-range. About 50-60 N m (40 lb-ft) more torque from 2100-3100 rpm.

I use to have a RX8, I clipped a 14.4 with it in the 1/4. Had some wider tires and intake/exhaust. Loved the car, handled great, but getting 17mpg without a lot of go got old. Rotary engines have several advantages vs a piston engine. The flat/boxer engine is the next best thing to a rotary IMO.

RX-8 1.3 liters. Automatic does not redline as high as the M/T. All the power is in the high end RPM of the 8. Its probably the worst automatic sports car for that reason and the fact that it will not clear carbon as well causing premature engine failure. RX-8 and FRS are for the track. Stop drag racing them! making us look bad! haha.

However, the RX8(also AT W/Paddle Shifters) took the victory by one car length +.

HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING!!

I dont know if this might be a flaw in my car, or the it has some thing to do with the ECU or Tranny / something else.... any ideas?

Or Rotary Engines Totally Have the upper hand (which i refused to believe)
The one with 75 more horsepower or the one with 150 more?

I don't know why people are bashing them for racing their cars because they are both slow. If its a close race, it's always fun in my book.

Not exactly...
Each rotor only fires ONCE per crank rotation. Three times per *rotor* rotation, but rotor rpm is 1/3 crank rpm.
If it's a 3.9 liter, it's a 3000rpm 3.9 liter, as that's the maximum rpm of the rotors.

In an H4 2.0 you get 2 cylinders firing per rotation at .5L each so that's 1.0L per rotation.
Yes, and the 13B rotary engine displaces 1.3 liters per crank revolution.

Like a 2-stroke, the rotary displaces its full displacement every crank rev. This is an advantage, but really more like a 1.5x advantage rather than 2x due to inherent rotary inefficiency (throws away energy as heat like CRAZY).

So a 9000rpm 1.3 liter na rotary ends up roughly comparable to a 9000rpm 2.0 liter piston engine. 13B ~ F20C. But not quite... F20C makes a little more.

The fault is in the owner, who the hell buys an automatic sports car?

I raced a nice, clean mt rx8 twice one night (before my header/unichip) and beat it both times. They are nice cars.. some are quick, some are not.

RX8 tried to race me... Winner...Cop by a car length!

Lol, I ignored him. He pulls away and an unmarked popo comes behind him and pulls him over a car length later!
