Look, those things are like crack. I was introduced to them on a vacation in BC (Victoria, then we drove over to Tofino). Don't judge :P

Thank you all for the info, I'll reply back with more specifics once I do a bit more digging. Ya'll have given me a lot to work with! Thanks!

Side note: How much is an engine swap going for these days if I did want more power?
Right on. If it's just knocking well you could just replace the internals with fresh OEM parts save some money there. That's if it's just rod knock.

As far as more power swaps depends what you swap it with. Most V8 swaps have been priced on ward of $8-10k. But all depends what motor, tranny, EMS. Then depend who does the install/tune. Either you do it your self or get a shop to do it completely or finish the rest.

Long Overdue Update

Alright folks, first off thanks for the initial replies back when I originally made this post in regards to my engine. I've taken a look at some of the options you all suggested and reached out to two dealerships here near SF.

Basically, I'm still not sure which direction to go but would like to lock down a decision ASAP. I've switched up jobs, not traveling as much and working back downtown so I can finally fix my baby (I own another car I've been using in the mean time) and get back to my original plans for her.

Essentially this is where I'm at and would like your assistance! Thank you kindly!

Options

1. Short block from Subaru is roughly $5500 (seems mad expensive)
2. Have another shop or two take a look at engine to determine if there is a hole in it or rod knock (suggestions would be lovely, I'm in SF and have Triple A, anything I can tow her to is doable)
3. Used engine (suggestions where to grab would be nice)
4. Buy an already supercharged or turbo'd engine (price is roughly around the same as the short block?)
5. Whatever I've missed that you suggest

If it's not obvious, haven't had much of a need to replace an engine before with any of my previous vehicles, so this process is pretty new to me.

Thanks fam!

Neal @theracersline was selling a few used FA20's with some minor failure for like 500$ an engine. I say minor cuz i dont actually know how bad it is, however you could get one of those and then build the short block for roughly 3-4k. I think one of them only has like 30k miles on it or something.

Question regarding the short blocks, where have you seen them for that price? I keep getting quoted for 5k+

My 2 cents. If you are not mechanically inclined and can swap out a engine and you have no warranty I would get a reputable shop to source and install a rebuilt or new FA20. A used engine is a crap shoot and if it hiccups it will leave you dependent on the dealer or shop to keep it going.

You can do it yourselve in 1 week if you have tools, garage and engine crane or couple of friends willing to help.
I did my first engine swap on my own having just a set of sockets and wrenches, had 0 knowledge how to do it before I started, but you can google everything this days.
