They had a look, sound, lightness, and raw edginess that made driving to the grocery store an event and track days memorable especially in the rain.

The '88 Turbo was truly lustworthy.
I bet. God I wish there was a way to capture that level of feeling in a more affordable or more modern car. I assume an LS swapped NA Miata gets close (Although without the looks, they're cute but not sexy)... but I'd have to cut my legs off to fit, hah!

I honestly chose the brz because it was as close and connected feeling as I could get while still having a relatively reliable car with cheap maintenance. This isn't the perfect car, but for what they cost they sure do drive well and look great.

My SO actually prefers the look of the twins to the modern caymans… She's wrong of course, but still, car is pretty.

That feeling of the air cooled 911's is so emotional for me that even the English language comes up short of adjectives.

I've tried describing it to non-car friends and by the time I'm done they're looking at me either fascinated or ready to call 9-1-1. Maybe I shouldn't tell them about the sweaty palms when the turbo kicked in.

A couple other cars I've owned come close ('73 Ferrari Dino, there's humps for you), but none pushed as many buttons.

And yes, you're right, I liked my FR-S for it's classic styling, road feel, and vestigal humps when viewed from the driver's seat. Twins are gorgeous cars that are aging well except when hacked like I've seen around town.

My FR-S wasn't the quickest on track except in slower corners but I had more fun than most and didn't go broke with consumables.

I don't mean to sound like a 911 snob. It's hard to fault most any sports or GT car. We need to support the individuals who still appreciate driving. Having the capabilities from DD to track days available at the 86 price point has helped to keep the Sunday drive intact.

Why buy an exotic car when you can buy an appliance with an electric motor that's faster and requires less input on your part?

Its all about what you truly enjoy, if its a car where you are thrilled when you wake up on a weekday knowing you are taking the fun car to work? Or you just worked (4) 80 hour work weeks in a row in a salary position, but you sit in your beautiful leather interior on your way home and think yeah that wasn't so bad. Or you are walking into a grocery store and you look back at your car to lock it, but you end up staring at it for 30 seconds. Or you call your insurance company to get it insured and the woman asks for the Vin and she is puzzled by a Vin starting with W, and then she realizes its a Porsche and suddenly she is extremely friendly on the phone....yeah I will buy an exotic, but that is what I enjoy. Some people its a muscle car, some its their first car, some its just the "joy" of building it.

I live in Mass where our roads are trash, highway driving is basically sand blasting, I can only drive it a few months out of a year, you get taxed extra, high insurance cost, you can't drive it on the road anywhere near where it is capable of....I would still buy an exotic and track it.

It also comes to limitations like in Massachusetts, I want to drive an LS Swapped RX8 on the road with an idle that makes it sound like its murdering small animals, but I can't legally drive it because its too loud and the chassis doesn't match the motor.

Once I finish the rest of my schooling (6 more years?), my present to myself will be an exotic car somewhere in the six figure range, should be some fun test drives.

A friend, that's an electric car fanboi, recently asked me this. ^

"Well, for a few reasons."

A. Because I had a Countach poster on my wall as a kid; not a poster of a Tesla.

B. Because (for me at least in this totally theoretical conversation) owning an exotic car is about Pedigree, not speed.

I mean the 25th anniversary edition 1990 Countach goes 0-60 in 4.7 sec - Not really that fast by today's standards. But who would argue that a Countach is not an Exotic?

It wasn't my baritone? Yeah, I'd have leveraged it if they weren't GU.

You cant even compare a demon to a hellcat. Its like comparing a cute little kitty cat to a demon possessed tiger. One will rip your throat out, and the other will lick your toes.

Not sure why you essentially compared a completely different car, its like comparing a car to a ZR1 but then posting the times for a stingray instead of the ZR1.
Take out most of the interior, remove the stereo, put the skinny tires on the front, adjust the dampers for weight transfer, put the drag tires on the back, put in 100 octane fuel, change the ECU, activate the line lock, burn out to get the rears up to temp, engage the translock, and so on. I'm sure I missed a step or fifteen to get those ETAs. Even then, you're either going to bog or peel out most of the time. The Demon is a joke in the real world.

I can totally relate to this.

I think you mean people are running really low 10s completely stock, full interior, stock tires, on pump gas, and in order to run high 9s, you need to do the most of what you said.

With drag slicks if you do a burnout first, use the tranny lock, and nail the launch, maybe. Real street tires, no burnout, and no lock? How about 5-60? It's a single-purpose vehicle. Car and Driver did three launches in the car and couldn't get a quarter mile time they were willing to even publish.

If I had all the money in the world, I would LEASE an exotic. Hopefully with a maintenence plan. That way, I could have a new toy every year. I drove by the Aston Martin dealership up here the other day, and they had one for $3000 a month. A mere pittance if I had all the money in the world.

Hmmm, I wonder what's more fun to most people? On one hand I can try to tame a screaming beast of an engine that shakes the whole car, that requires you to do things just right to get a best time...

Or I can just push one pedal and get the same results every time, with little noise/emotion or fanfare. Most people watching probably wouldnt' even realize you just went down the 1/4 mile.

Sometimes I just want to get home quickly or squirt through a hole in traffic. Real world driving. I've never been to a drag strip and I never plan on going to one. What's so fucking hard about saying, "OK, in normal driving, a M3P is going to be faster. I get it." You can't get your mind around that or you're just stubborn?
