Carolina Dyno Prototype Turbo Kit & Shop Car Update

We have had a really busy summer thanks to our great local customers but finally we've had some time to settle down and get back to the shop car. This weekend it started for the first time since we took it home from the dealership almost a year ago. We have been working on a variety of products but the big one of course is our turbo kit. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.

As with all of our products all fabrication is done in house, and we only source quality motorsports grade components and material.

The kit is designed to fit either a Borg Warner EFR 7670 or 7064, of course for our shop car we went with the 7670. We didn't hold anything back going with a divided T4 collector & dual TiAL MV-S wastegates.

We built our own end tanks around a 4" bell intercooler core. The intercooler is mounted at the same angle as the radiator and condenser allowing for the biggest possible core without trimming the bumper.

The turbo is mounted towards the passenger side which makes for better exhaust routing and allows us to use the factory dipstick boss for our oil drain. We have made a custom stainless steel hardline for the drain that incorporates a dipstick. This allows for a proper oil drain that is virtually vertical and still well above the oil level. It also means nothing has to be drilled, tapped, or modified.

We will update this thread with many more details and pictures as we make our final adjustments. We should have dyno numbers by the end of the week. We also got our first impressions of our custom Stoptech complete front and rear big brake kit, even though it was just brief street driving we are happy so far and confident they will do well on track.

That intercooler is HUGE! I am guessing this setup is more aimed toward drag? If for road course, aren't you worries about airflow to the radiator?

We will definitely be regularly tracking the car on the road course as well as the drag strip. We will solve whatever cooling issues come up but there is no reason that intercooler should be an issue. We're talking about a relatively low output all aluminum 2.0l block with plenty of cooling surface area.

While we haven't had the opportunity to properly test at the track I'm confident we will find a cooling solution without compromising power.

Nice looking turbo kit! I look forward to see how that EFR turbo does on this platform. It's a killer set up.

Doesn't matter that this is a 2.0L when you are boosting it and doubling the power lol. Every turbocharged 86 that hits the road courses here in SoCal/NorCal have massive heat issues in the summer. Even low/rear mount turbos. The current prevailing theory is there just isn't enough airflow through the radiator especially with that huge bumper crash beam and a sealed up engine bay (skid plate). Now if you are planning to run without the bumper beam then that is a different story.

I think as far as I know the only successful turbocharged 86 out here who can do 25-30 min time attack sessions without heat issues is @ImperiousRex who still saw 230 F coolant at the end of the session which is too hot for comfort still.

I look forward to how you address the heat situation on your car. @Speed Element had to ditch the stock bumper crash beam and install a taller/larger radiator and vent the hood. He also doesn't run a skid plate as far as I know.

A lot of lessons learned the hard way, but now we know what it takes to keep the car cool.

If you're willing to lose the crash beam, then a lot of options open up...

We did ditch the crash beam on ours but the issue is more than just airflow over the radiator. Look at Honda's they are 2l engines with similar (smaller) radiators and you can triple the power output and never see temps over 190 on the track even after an hour. Like I said we're way early in development and I don't know what the solution will be but I'm confident we'll work through it just like CSG Mike has with their car.
