I feel like this topic has been hashed to death. No doubt the Twins are "slow" cars stock, but there are plenty of other slow cars I'd happily drive and/or track. Miata, RX-8, S2000, Integra Type-R, RSX-S, 987.1 Cayman, 986 Boxster...they all run 14 or 15 second 1/4 miles and guess what else... they are all sub-3000 lbs and great to drive.
I've had the chance to track a few 400-500whp cars and sure it's fun powering out of corners and accelerating down the straight, but it's equally fun to me chucking a lightweight car into corners or carving up back roads in a small chassis. Who knows maybe this is their grand epiphany in the final episode (or not), but regardless there's such a misplaced emphasis on horsepower and 60/quarter mile times these days you'd think the only fun you could have in a car is flooring it in a straight line.

Unless you are in a one make series or racing against yourself, constantly being passed on the straight bits gets tiresome. This is why a little turbo and around 250 - 300hp in one is awesomeballs, and stock cars are moving traffic cones that get in the way. Opinions may vary

The problem is at the price point we're discussing, you have to sacrifice weight and size to get power. Under $30k (or even $60k) there are no sub-3000 lbs cars with 300+ hp. You have to step up to something like a cayman/boxster s to get there, and those are $60k+ cars. My issue is the video made it seem like "slow cars" can't be fun, and I would absolutely disagree. I actually think some of the slow cars I listed are among the most fun I've driven, not because they lacked power but in spite of it.

EverydayDriver did the same thing going uphill in the mountains for one of their videos. Like, you could even see they were in 5th gear going 45-ish mph (give or take) at like 2k rpm or whatever (it was obviously in the torque dip), and I remember asking about it on the channel comments and their producer/editor kept defending them saying they were just trying to show the dip to prove how slow it is. *eyeroll*

They were spot on. After owning much faster cars and directly stepping in to this it probably does feel quite horrible. The "dip" is definitely noticeable from a rolling 1st or 2nd gear acceleration and there is no way to really "just downshift" like so many people say in those situations.
Great episode of MCM. Hopefully there is some boost coming soon and they skip NA stuff altogether. |
