Also, make sure you don't need to add distilled water to your battery. The stock battery is not maintenance free. Check the fluid level (there are makings in the outside and you can also take each cap off and look inside.

If its low on distilled water, you need to add some or trying to charge it when dry will not get you anywhere.

Nice tips! I went ahead and ordered the charger because, push comes to shove, it's a "nice to have". Having said that, I'm seriously considering a new battery. Any brand/models you'd recommend to a stock car? Thanks in advance.

Never hurts to have a charger on hand and they are cheap enough.
There are different brands and sources available in the U.S. then we have here so I will let somebody from down there field the question.

I wouldn't worry about the brand as much as the replacement/total warranty. that will speak towards the battery quality. Also, check the manufacturing date so you get one as fresh as possible.

A large percentage of batteries in the US (and probably the world) are made by the same single company anyway (Johnson Controls). They make most "private label" batteries including Interstate, DieHard, Duralast, EverStart (WalMart brand), Kirkland, ProStart. They own Varta, Optima, LTH and Heliar, and make OEM batteries for Ford, Chrysler Honda, Toyota and Nissan.

Never ever charge a battery via the alternator from a dead state. When charging from a charger make sure the terminals are disconnected and you charge at the lowest amperage possible. I charge at 2amps for a good 6 hours and that works well, slower yes but less chance of sulfation that way.

Duralast from AutoZone is a good brand if you want to replace your battery. their warranty rocks. my brother's battery had extreme corrosion and his terminal was stuck on the post. after pouring coke and getting the corrosion off and terminal unstuck, we noticed that the post was lifting slightly when pulling on the terminal. we took it to AutoZone and wanted to buy a new battery, but they looked up his info in the system and gave him a new one for free. it had been at least 3 years since he bought the battery and they still replaced it. caught me off guard.

Charging mine at 6A with a charger. It's coming up nicely… Maybe I should get it down to 2A though. I did take the battery completely out of the car and brought into the house (i.e. into an unused bathroom, where I can run the exhaust fan).

It took about 5 minutes to go from 0% charge to about 50% (again, 6A). The fluids seem to be good so I have faith in this battery… :P

Well, I guess "final update": fully charged (to 100%) in about 12h at 6A. Seems to be working just fine now…

Thanks for everyone that sent in their tips and recommendations!
