Don't like the front end of the refresh models though. I prefer the earlier 2015 front ends which you can only now get with a Shelby (which I'd probably get anyway if I ever wanted a Mustang). |

The SVT Cobras and Cobra R had IRS 20+ years ago... before the GT350, the Cobra R would be the one mustang I always kind of secretly admired and they were fun to watch autocross and go around a roadcourse.
More of a Camaro fan over Mustang, but always been an import/lightweight car fan at heart over anything else - lightweight car with fully independent finely honed suspension trumps power and grip to me. My 2300lb '90 Integra RS was a blast to drive on track - liked to step out the rear and out accelerated my stripped down track '98 Camaro RS while handling circles around it even if it didn't seem have the ultimate steady state grip the Camaro did. The stripped down '98 RS Camaro hardtop (absolutely lightest version of the 4th gen Camaro) on spherical bearing race suspension components with Koni adjustable shocks, wide DOT-R track rubber, and massive antiroll bars front and rear was a 3200lb pig that swore me off American 'performance'...no match for the effortless and nearly instant transients of the Integra RS. Brakes were absolutely phenominal on that RS Camaro though since they had the same system as the V8's starting in 98... with just Brembo rotors and Hawk HP+ pads it would absolutely slow down quick to a stop...absolutely thrown into the harness with the quick deceleration ... often would brake too much and have to get back on the gas for the corner... LOL I find as a car approaches and surpasses 3000lbs my interest in it falls to ZERO rapidly. I'm fine with the first gen 86... though I would like to put mine on more of a diet (I've dropped ~50lbs off it from all minor stuff I've done over the years - want to go on a more concentrated effort where I can). If the second gen weight increases 100lbs or more I'd never consider it over a first gen - don't care what kind of power it makes, weight is and always will be the enemy for me. The new civics are absolutely laughable to me....1,000lb gain and strut suspension is a far cry from the double wishbone civics of the '90s. I remember the first time I saw a new gen Civic parked next to my FR-S...honestly though it was an Accord until I saw the Civic badge... jaw dropped. To further put it in perspective, my '98 Toyota Tacoma weighed less than some of these new Civics... LOL

Pretty big blanketed statement considering the Corolla(best selling vehicle of all time),Camry, and Tacoma/Tundra. Not sure anyone would say any of those vehicles suck.

Just a mention of cars that have gotten better after 1st (or preceding) generations
2nd Gen Boxster (987) > 1st Gen Boxster (986) 2nd Gen MR2 > 1st Gen MR2 3rd Gen RX7 > 1st & 2nd Gen RX7 Off top of my head. No point mentioning any domestic sports cars because those always improve with the latest generations.

Faster? Sure. Better? To certain people. It's worth noting that in both cases the 3rd gens took a weight reduction, and in the MR-2s case, power decrease as well. |

The Second Gen 86 may come out as a totally monstrosity to the people that love the first gen and it will still have a large (and mostly different) group that will think it is miles "better".

Yes, Toyota from the 90s through till about the mid-aughts was a bland, soulless company of beancounters making cars, but it's hard to ignore the change in tone since Akio Toyoda took over. Despite the financial crisis, and the move towards SUVs etc., Toyota still launched a few sports cars (LFA, LC, RC, 86, Supra) while also bringing more driver-oriented flavour to their regular models (seen a few positive reviews of the new Corolla, and even the CH-R from reviewers generally not too positive of Toyota). Even though some of these new sports cars required partnerships with other manufacturers, the fact that they got made at all (in a market that seems destined for domination by CUVs/SUVs, with low-volume niche products like sports cars seen as money-losing propositions) is a signal to me. On the flip side, I feel like Subaru has lost a lot of its charm and identity (I feel like the bugeye WRX was the last time they really did something noteworthy) - the Forester, Outback, etc. are going more and more mainstream, and struggle to standout from the pack (not that I blame them for this - business is business). |
